On the 23rd, Wavve announced, “The film ‘Bi-gwang,’ starring Ryu Seung-ryong and Ha Ji-won, will be released exclusively on Wavve as an Over-the-Top (OTT) service.”
“Bigwang” is a poignant family saga in which Jung-gu (Ryu Seung-ryong) and Nam-mi (Ha Ji-won), a couple of top stars, face a marital breakdown after the sudden appearance of Jung-gu’s daughter, Dong-ju (Kim Si-ah). Eight years later, they stake everything they have left to uncover the truth and save Dong-ju, who has become entangled in a shocking incident.
Ryu Seung-ryong plays Jung-gu, a former star of Korean baseball who falls from grace overnight but rises again to protect his daughter. Ha Ji-won portrays Nam-mi, a struggling entertainer who, after falling from her status as a glamorous top star, tenaciously fights to make ends meet, showcasing a dramatic transformation. Joining them is Kim Si-ah as Dong-ju, who is pushed to the brink after being named a prime suspect in a case following a friend’s death. Together, these three characters form the center of the story, depicting the complex family relationships and emotions that intertwine around them.
Kim Hae-sook, Kim Sun-young, and Kim Young-min also come together as family members. Kim Hae-sook plays Ki-sik, Jung-gu’s mother, who steps in to protect her granddaughter Dong-ju when she is in crisis, while Kim Sun-young portrays Ji-suk, Jung-gu’s older sister, who grumbles but prioritizes her family above all else. Kim Young-min plays Seong-myeong, Ji-suk’s husband, who works with Jung-gu to track down clues in the case and keeps the family grounded.
With a solid cast—including Ryu Seung-ryong, Ha Ji-won, Kim Si-ah, Kim Hae-sook, Kim Sun-young, and Kim Young-min—working together as a family, the complex relationships and emotional shifts they portray are highlighted as key points of interest.
The film’s title, “Bigwang,” carries symbolic meaning inspired by “hwatu” cards—which are incomplete on their own but only fulfill their purpose when combined. By depicting the solidarity and deep familial love of characters who cling to one another to survive in moments of crisis, the film aims to be a perfect choice for families to enjoy together during the Chuseok holiday.
“Bigwang” is directed by Lee Ji-won, who won the New Director Award at the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards for her film “Miss Baek.” Director Lee Ji-won, who depicted solidarity and salvation in “Miss Baek,” expands the narrative in this work to center on the solidarity and sacrifice of a family striving to protect one another in times of crisis. Notably, Kim Si-ah from “Miss Baek” and Ha Ji-won from the drama “Climax” have reunited with Director Lee for this project.
