[Edaily Reporter Son Eui-Yeon ] Actress Park Ji-hyun has become the first Korean actress to be nominated for the International Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress for her role in the Netflix series "Eun-joong and Sang-yeon."

According to the International Emmy Awards website on the 25th, Park Ji-hyun has been nominated for Best Actress at the 54th International Emmy Awards. The list of nominees was announced on the 23rd (local time).

Park Ji-hyun will compete for the award alongside Mona Mina Leon from the Belgian drama “Holy Shh,” Barbara Mori from the Mexican series “The World of Luca,” and Sheridan Smith from the British series “I Pout the Law.”

Released last September, “Eun-joong and Sang-yeon” centers on the conflicts between two friends—Eun-joong (played by Kim Go-eun) and Sang-yeon (played by Park Ji-hyun)—whose lives are intricately intertwined from their teens through their 40s, while tackling the weighty topic of “assisted dying.”

Among Korean productions, the Disney+ series “Hyperknife,” starring Park Eun-bin and Seol Kyung-gu, has also been nominated in the TV Movie/Miniseries category. It will compete against productions from Spain, Brazil, and the UK.

The winners will be announced on November 23 (local time) in New York City.

The International Emmy Awards were established in 1973 to introduce outstanding programs from countries outside the U.S. to American audiences. Considered one of the world’s three major broadcasting awards alongside Canada’s Banff TV Festival and Monaco’s Monte Carlo TV Festival, it is a separate awards ceremony from the Primetime Emmy Awards, which are often referred to as the “Academy Awards of the television industry.”

Last year, the Netflix series “Dakgangjeong,” based on a webtoon, was nominated in the comedy category but did not win. Previously, in 2022, the KBS 2TV drama “Yeonmo” became the first Korean drama to win an International Emmy Award.

The International Emmy Awards are organized by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences and recognize content from countries outside the United States.
