[Edaily Reporter YunJi Kim ] On the 26th, the third day of the Chuseok holiday, heavy rain and high wind advisories were issued for most areas of Jeju, and damage caused by the wind and rain continued to mount. Strong winds toppled utility poles and street trees and shattered building windows, resulting in damage to infrastructure.

According to the Jeju Fire and Safety Headquarters on the 26th, a total of 13 reports of damage caused by heavy rain and strong winds had been received as of 9:30 a.m. that day.

Around 7:55 a.m. that day, a woman in her 20s slipped on a rainy road in Ido 2-dong, Jeju City, injuring her back and was taken to a hospital. Subsequently, around 7:59 a.m., a utility pole fell in Jocheon-eup, Jeju City, and a street tree was snapped by strong winds in Hagwi-ri, Aewol-eup.

Damage to buildings and road infrastructure also occurred. Around 8:11 a.m., a window was blown out by strong winds at an apartment building in Oedo 1-dong, Jeju City. Around the same time, an incident occurred in Hwabuk 1-dong where a window blown by the wind flew into the interior of a home.

Around 8:23 a.m. in Geonip-dong, Jeju City, a utility pole fell and crashed onto a building’s roof. In the same area, a signboard was blown by the wind and fell onto the road. Around 8:43 a.m. on Udo Island, a power pole and a telecommunications pole collapsed, prompting fire authorities to take safety measures.

In addition, a soccer goalpost toppled in Oedo 1-dong, Jeju City, and reports were received from Guju-eup that window screens were shaking violently due to strong winds. Around 8:00 a.m., on a road near Hamdeok Beach in Jeju City, a large bench was blown by the wind and pushed onto the road, prompting the Jeju Coast Guard to take emergency action.

Heavy rain and strong wind advisories are currently in effect for most areas of Jeju. As of 10:00 a.m. today, the Korea Meteorological Administration expanded the heavy rain advisory to cover the entire island of Jeju, excluding the western part of Seogwipo City and Chuja Island. At 11:00 a.m., a heavy rain warning was issued for the mountainous and mid-mountain regions of Jeju. A strong wind advisory was issued for the entire island, excluding the southern part of Seogwipo City and Chuja Island.

The Korea Meteorological Administration predicted that heavy rain of around 30 mm per hour would fall, primarily in areas where heavy rain advisories were in effect as of this morning. Until this afternoon, gusts of 20 m/s or more—and up to 25 m/s in mountainous areas—are expected in some places, so caution is advised regarding the management of facilities and the prevention of safety accidents.
