[Edaily Reporter Lee Youn-jung ] The movie “The Man Who Lives with the King,” which took the Lunar New Year box office by storm, demonstrated its box-office prowess on home screens during the Chuseok holiday as well. It recorded double-digit viewership ratings during its TV premiere, ranking first among all programs aired during the Chuseok holiday. According to Nielsen Korea on the 27th, “The Man Who Lives with the King” (directed by Jang Hang-jun), which aired on the 26th as an SBS Chuseok special, recorded a viewership rating of 11% nationwide and 11.8% in the Seoul metropolitan area. This was the highest rating among terrestrial TV programs aired that day and ranked first overall among all broadcast programs during the Chuseok holiday.
It even outperformed major sports events and news programs. The “2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games Women’s Basketball Final: South Korea vs. Japan,” broadcast on KBS1, recorded a nationwide viewership rating of 10.0%, while KBS’s “News 9” recorded 7.4%.
It is also noteworthy that the broadcast was delayed by about an hour from its scheduled time. Originally set to air at 9:30 p.m., the schedule was pushed back because the live broadcast of a baseball game from the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games was delayed due to heavy rain at the venue. Despite the late broadcast time, it maintained the top spot in viewership ratings among all terrestrial broadcasters.
Released on February 4, “The Man Who Lives with the King” is set in Cheongnyeongpo, Yeongwol, Gangwon Province, in 1457. It tells the story of the young former King Danjong, who was deposed and exiled, and village chief Eom Heung-do, who volunteered to be exiled to help revive the village. The film stars Park Ji-hoon, Yoo Hae-jin, Yoo Ji-tae, Jeon Mi-do, and Oh Dal-su.
The film also sparked a box office sensation early on. After surpassing 10 million viewers in just over a month since its release, it continued its long-running success, drawing a cumulative total of 16.93 million viewers. It became the highest-grossing film of the year and ranked second all-time among Korean films, following *The Admiral: Roaring Currents*.
