According to the Korean Film Council’s integrated computer network on the 28th, “The Assassin(s)” drew 1,119,154 viewers over the three days from the 25th to the 27th, securing the No. 1 spot at the box office. Since its release on the 23rd, it has maintained the top spot for five consecutive days, recording a cumulative audience of 1,566,220. Amid the release of several new Korean films during the Chuseok holiday, it maintained its lead by outperforming its competitors.
“Tazza: The Song of Beelzebub” took second place. It drew 566,527 viewers during the same period, bringing its cumulative total to 833,031.
“The Odyssey” took third place, adding 364,763 viewers over three days to reach a cumulative total of 11,783,297. Next, “The Intern” drew 206,349 viewers and “Possible Love” drew 72,022, placing them in fourth and fifth place, respectively.
Consequently, with the exception of the long-running hit “The Odyssey,” Korean films released around the Chuseok holiday in September dominated the top five spots at the box office. “Assassins” and “Tazza: The Song of Beelzebub” took first and second place, respectively, highlighting the strong presence of Korean cinema during the Chuseok theater season.
Changes also emerged in the advance ticket sales landscape following the Chuseok holiday. As of 7:00 a.m. on the 28th, the top spot in advance ticket sales was held by the Japanese animated film “Chiikawa: The Secret of the Mermaid Island,” set to open on the 30th, with 159,103 tickets sold.
“Odyssey” followed in second place with 63,476 tickets, while “The Assassin(s)” took third place with 52,173 tickets. “The Resurrected Man: The Red,” starring Koo Kyo-hwan and set to open on the 30th, ranked fourth with 41,768 tickets, while “Tazza: Song of Beelzebub” ranked fifth with 31,987 tickets.
While Korean films dominated the top spots at the box office during the Chuseok holiday, attention is now focused on whether the rankings will shift following the holiday as new releases, including animated films, are added to the lineup.
