[Edaily Reporter Shin Ha-yeon ] Today (the 28th) is the last day to purchase shares of SamsungElectronics(005930)to receive its largest-ever cash dividend. Even after the regular trading session ends, purchases settled by 8:00 p.m.—when the Korea Exchange (KRX) after-hours market closes—will still be eligible for the dividend.

According to the financial investment industry on the 28th, SamsungElectronics’ record date for its third-quarter dividend is the upcoming 30th. Since settlement for domestic stocks occurs two business days after the purchase date, investors must buy shares by that day to receive the dividend. The 29th is the ex-dividend date, when the right to receive the dividend expires.

Trades executed on the KRX after-hours market are also treated as same-day trades. Accordingly, even if a purchase order is placed after 3:30 p.m., when the regular trading session ends, as long as the trade is actually executed by 8:00 p.m. that day, investors can secure the right to receive the dividend. Orders that are submitted but not executed will not qualify for the dividend.

This dividend marks the first phase of the shareholder return plan approved by SamsungElectronics’ board of directors on August 21. SamsungElectronics plans to distribute approximately 30 trillion won in cash dividends, including the regular third-quarter dividend. Of this amount, approximately 27.55 trillion won—excluding the existing quarterly dividend of about 2.45 trillion won—is effectively a special dividend.

EUGENE INVESTMENT & SECURITIES calculated the 30 trillion won cash dividend at 4,604 won per share for both common and preferred shares. Based on this calculation, it is estimated that holders of 100 SamsungElectronics shares will receive 460,400 won, holders of 1,000 shares will receive 4,604,000 won, and holders of 10,000 shares will receive 46,040,000 won, all before taxes. After applying the 15.4% dividend income tax, the estimated amount received for 1,000 shares is approximately 3,895,000 won.

However, the 4,604 won per share is a securities firm’s estimate and is not a confirmed amount. SamsungElectronics is scheduled to determine the specific dividend per share and payment schedule at a board meeting at the end of next month. Over the past three years, SamsungElectronics has held board meetings on the last day of October to decide on quarterly dividends, with payments typically made around November 20.

Meanwhile, caution is advised for short-term investments focused solely on dividends. Typically, on the ex-dividend date, the right to receive dividends is lost, so the stock price may fall by an amount equivalent to the expected dividend. Even if you sell your shares on the 29th, you will still receive this dividend; however, if the decline in the stock price due to the ex-dividend date exceeds the after-tax dividend amount, your overall investment return could result in a loss.

Ryu Hyung-geun, an analyst at DaishinSecurities, noted, “The next-generation (2027–2029) shareholder return policy is expected to be announced in January 2027,” adding, “As many
mor semiconductor companies have announced policies that are more market-friendly than in the past, so SamsungElectronics’ shareholder return policy is also expected to be strengthened,” he noted.

He continued, “If there is one change the market should pay attention to, it is the continuity of shareholder returns,” adding, “While memory semiconductor shareholder returns in the past were one-off events, we can now expect continuity.” He emphasized, “The reduction in cycle risk based on long-term contracts is the catalyst that can make this a reality, and expectations for continuous—rather than one-off—shareholder returns represent a change that can lead to enhanced corporate value.”
