[Edaily LEE DAWON Reporter] SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION has enhanced the seismic performance of its dry-jointing technology—which assembles precast concrete (PC) columns and beams on-site—to the level of a special-moment frame. The company has also strengthened the technological foundation for applying PC-rahmen structures to “Next Home,” a future residential model designed to maximize space utilization by eliminating interior columns.

SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION(028260) The Construction Division announced on the 28th that it had obtained technical certification from the Korean Concrete Institute for its “PC Special Moment Beam-Column Dry Joint Construction Method.”

The official certification name is “PC Special Moment Beam-Column Dry Joint Construction Method Using Box-Type Connectors with Reinforcement Mechanical Joints and Bracket Functions.”

SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION’s “Next Home” project utilizes a column-free precast concrete (PC) moment-resisting frame structure within each unit. Since columns and beams support the building instead of walls, ensuring the structural safety and seismic performance of the joints where these two members connect is a key technical challenge.

Ramen structures are classified into standard, intermediate, and special-moment frames based on their seismic performance. Joints between beams and columns in super-high-rise buildings require performance equivalent to or exceeding that of intermediate-moment frames. Intermediate-moment frames must maintain structural safety even when deformation reaches 2% of the floor height, while special-moment frames must do so even at 3.5%.

PC dry joining is a method of connecting factory-manufactured columns and beams on-site. Due to the nature of this method, in which forces are transmitted directly through the rebar at the joints, construction is highly challenging and there have been limitations in ensuring seismic performance.

To address these issues, SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION developed a connection mechanism that combines seismic-resistant steel brackets with bolted fastening capabilities. In 2024, the company received technical certification for this intermediate-moment frame technology.

Subsequently, by refining the detailed structure—including the joint geometry—and conducting extreme performance tests, the company enhanced the seismic performance to the level of special moment frames. According to SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION, this marks the first time in Korea that the PC dry-joint method has received technical certification from the Korean Concrete Institute for special moment frames.

Based on this certification, SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION plans to expand the scope of application to include super-tall buildings utilizing PC framing. As this involves the Off-Site Construction (OSC) method—where major components are manufactured in a factory and assembled on-site—the company expects to reduce on-site workloads, improve construction quality, and shorten project timelines.

SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION intends to continue expanding the scope of OSC applications based on this technology and to advance the development of future residential technologies, including “Next Home.”

Byeon Dong-kyu, Head of the Housing Technology Innovation Team at SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION, stated, “This certification is significant because it officially recognizes that we have achieved the high seismic resistance required for PC moment-resisting frames using practical dry-joint technology.” He added, “We will continue to lead change in the construction industry through the OSC method and create unparalleled value based on our differentiated technology and quality.”
