[Edaily Reporter Kim Kyung-eun ] The KOSPI, returning from the Chuseok holiday, fell below the 7,000 mark during trading. Although AI-related stocks rebounded on the U.S. stock market, the index is being dragged down by heavy selling by foreign investors amid continued concerns over a sharp rise in U.S. long-term Treasury yields and high international oil prices.

According to MP Doctor on the 28th, as of 10:10 a.m. that day, the KOSPI was trading at 6,977.30, down 103.62 points (1.46%) from the previous trading day. The index opened at 7,057.86, down 23.06 points (0.33%) from the previous close, but continued to slide during the session, falling below the 6,000 mark.

Although the New York stock market rebounded during the holiday period on expectations of AI investments, this positive momentum does not appear to be spilling over to the domestic stock market. Long-term U.S. Treasury yields and international oil prices are weighing on the domestic stock market. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note surpassed 5.22% during trading on the 25th, hitting a 19-year high. International oil prices also fell briefly following Iran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but Brent crude continues to hover above $100 per BARREL.

Foreign investors are selling heavily. As of this writing, they have recorded net sales of 616.9 billion won, leading the index lower. Institutions have also joined the net selling, offloading 44.7 billion won worth of shares. In contrast, retail investors are net buyers, purchasing 342.8 billion won worth of shares.

In particular, large-cap semiconductor stocks—which have been driving the domestic stock market—are falling in unison, weighing on the index. SamsungElectronics(005930)is trading at 275,500 won, down 10,000 won (3.50%) from the previous trading day. SK hynix(000660)is trading at 1,788,500 won, down 73,500 won (3.95%) from the previous close.

In addition, SKSQUARE(402340)(-5.71%) and SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION(028260)(-3.815) are among the decliners. On the other hand, SamsungElectroMechanics(009150)(0.66%), LG Energy Solution(373220)(4.27%), HyundaiMotor(005380)(0.71%), and SAMSUNG BIOLOGICS(207940)(1.835) are among the gainers.

By sector, construction, chemicals, entertainment and culture, and IT services are showing strength. Electrical and electronics, manufacturing, and distribution are showing weakness.

At this time, the KOSDAQ is trading at 857.68, up 13.33 points (1.58%) from the previous trading day. The index opened at 845.48, up 1.00 point (0.12%) from the previous close, and has continued its upward trend.

By investor type, foreign investors are net buyers of 73.8 billion won, while institutional investors are net buyers of 11.2 billion won. Retail investors are net sellers of 81.2 billion won.

The top two KOSDAQ stocks by market capitalization are both up by around 2%. Alteogen Inc.(196170)is trading at 257,000 won, up 7,000 won (2.80%) from the previous close, while ECOPRO CO., LTD(086520)is trading at 81,700 won, up 1,600 won (2.00%).

In addition, ECOPRO BM CO., LTD.(247540)(3.14%) and JUSUNG ENGINEERING Co.,Ltd.(036930)(0.95%) are also on the rise. Rainbow Robotics(277810)(-0.81%) and WONIK IPS Co.,Ltd.(240810)(-4.56%) are among the decliners.

Han Ji-young, an analyst at KIWOOM Securities, said, “The stock market will continue to face uncertainty this week surrounding rising U.S. long-term interest rates,” but added, “We expect the recovery in leadership from AI infrastructure stocks—such as semiconductor stocks driven by Agent AI—to provide upward momentum to the market.” She added, “It is expected that a strategy of viewing the volatility that may arise as the market processes a series of major domestic and international events—such as Micron’s earnings report, export data, and employment figures—all concentrated toward the end of the week as an opportunity to increase equity exposure will remain effective.”
