On the 27th (local time), the group BTS won three awards—including “Song of the Year,” the top prize—at the “2026 MTV Video Music Awards” (MTV VMAs) and shared these remarks through their agency, Big Hit Music.
That day, at the “MTV VMAs” held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, BTS won “Song of the Year” and “Best K-Pop” for “SWIM,” the title track of their fifth studio album, “Arirang.” They also took home the award for “Best Group.”
The “MTV VMAs” is an awards ceremony that the music channel MTV has hosted annually since 1984. It is considered one of the “four major U.S. pop music awards” alongside the “Grammy Awards,” “Billboard Music Awards,” and “American Music Awards.”
“Song of the Year” is considered the grand prize of the “MTV VMAs,” alongside “Video of the Year” and “Artist of the Year.” This marks the second time a K-pop artist has won the “Song of the Year” award at this ceremony. Previously, BLACKPINK’s Rosé made history last year as the first K-pop artist to win the award for “APT.,” a song she performed with pop star Bruno Mars.
BTS did not attend the ceremony due to scheduling conflicts. BTS stated, “We believe we were able to receive this prestigious ‘Song of the Year’ award thanks to everyone who loves our music,” adding, “We will continue to bring you great music and performances as a group of seven.”
Meanwhile, at the awards ceremony that day, BLACKPINK member Lisa won the “Best Pop” award for “Dream,” a track from her first solo studio album, “ALTER EGO.” This marks the first time an Asian solo artist has won this award.
