[Edaily Starin Choi Hee-jae Reporter] “Korea is truly a fantastic country. I’m looking forward to seeing how Korean audiences will receive ‘The Digger’ and what kind of conversations it will spark.” Actor Tom Cruise poses during a press conference for the movie “Digger” held at the Conrad Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul, on the 1st. (Photo = Yonhap News) Hollywood actor Tom Cruise (64) made these remarks on the 1st during a press conference held at the Conrad Hotel in Yeouido, Seoul, when asked about his feelings regarding his 13th visit to Korea. Known for his special affection for Korea—so much so that he’s been nicknamed a “pro at visiting Korea”—he smiled brightly and said, “I hope I can come here at least 30 more times.”
Tom Cruise, who has become synonymous with action through series such as “Mission: Impossible” and “Top Gun” and is deeply loved in Korea, takes on the lead role of Digger Rockwell in this film, embarking on a radical transformation. Using special makeup to portray white hair and a protruding belly, he embodies the character of a greedy tycoon. His gait and voice were also meticulously crafted. The actor, now in his 46th year in the industry, said, “It’s a character unlike any I’ve played before, and a truly original film.”
“Digger” tells the story of how a small crack in the Greenland glacier drilling facility owned by the eccentric tycoon Digger Rockwell escalates into an unprecedented global catastrophe. It is the latest film from director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, who won Academy Awards for Best Director for “Birdman” and “The Revenant.” Tom Cruise praised Iñárritu, saying, “Director Iñárritu is a master on par with Steven Spielberg, Stanley Kubrick, and Martin Scorsese,” adding, “He’s on another level in every respect.”
Even before its release, “Digger” was being touted as a contender for major Academy Award categories thanks to the collaboration between Tom Cruise and Director Iñárritu. Tom Cruise remarked, “I don’t really obsess over awards. I’m looking forward to the impact this film will have on the film industry,” adding, “I want to leave behind a story that will stand the test of time, and I believe this film can be that kind of work.” “The Digger” opens on the 3rd.
