[Breaking News] Despite New York Stock Market Reaching Record Highs… KOSPI Continues to Fall Day After Day

[Edaily Reporter Kwon Oh Seok ] While U.S. stock markets continue to hit record highs and the upward trend in U.S. Treasury yields has slowed, the KOSPI has been unable to escape a downward trend for several consecutive days. This is believed to be due to caution ahead of SamsungElectronics’ earnings announcement and concerns over an AI (artificial intelligence) bubble, both of which are affecting investor sentiment.

According to MP Doctor on the 7th, the KOSPI opened at 6,864.25, down 77.14 points (1.11%) from the previous trading day, and as of 9:16 a.m., it was trading at 6,923.73, down 17.66 points (0.25%).
So far today, retail investors are the only net buyers in the KOSPI market, with net purchases totaling 468.7 billion won, while foreign and institutional investors are net sellers by 424.0 billion won and 75.8 billion won, respectively. By trading type, combined arbitrage and non-arbitrage trades show a net selling position of 348.2 billion won.
Earlier, the U.S. stock market in New York hit another all-time high. On the 6th (local time), the S&P 500 index closed at 7,818.93 on the New York Stock Exchange, up 0.58% from the previous trading day, marking the first time it has closed above the 7,800 level. The tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index also rose 0.45% to 27,599.79, setting a new all-time high for the second consecutive day, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 51,521.28, up 0.49%.
U.S. Treasury yields and oil prices, which had previously weighed on the stock market, began to ease. The yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note fell 3 basis points (1 bp = 0.01 percentage point) to 5.281%, and the yield on the 30-year note—which had surpassed 5.7% during the session—also dropped to the low 5.6% range. In addition, following news of an agreement among the Group of Seven (G7) nations to release strategic oil reserves, December-delivery Brent crude closed up 0.26% at $100.58 per barrel, while November-delivery West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude also closed slightly higher, up 0.01%, at $89.44 per barrel.
Major semiconductor stocks are also on a downward trend. SamsungElectronics(005930)is trading at 268,750 won, down 3,250 won (1.19%) from the previous trading day, while SK hynix(000660)is trading at 1,731,000 won, down 42,000 won (2.37%).
The securities industry, which had initially forecast that the stock market would open higher today, is maintaining a positive outlook for now. Han Ji-young, an analyst at KIWOOM Securities, predicted, “During the trading session, the market’s upside will be capped as investor caution regarding SamsungElectronics’ preliminary earnings and concerns about the market’s closure later in the week overlap, leading to a rotation among sectors.”
She continued, “Although most stock markets are exposed to the same global variables—such as reduced AI investment, debates over the pace of AI adoption, and rising U.S. interest rates—the KOSPI alone is showing a relatively slower recovery in stock prices.” She added, “Considering that the burden of U.S. market interest rates and concerns over rising oil prices are easing, it is unlikely that the KOSPI’s relative resilience will weaken further at this point.”
Meanwhile, the KOSDAQ index opened at 917.45, down 2.47 points (0.27%) from the previous trading day, and is currently trading at 913.03, down 6.89 points (0.75%) at the same time.
So far today, retail and institutional investors have been net buyers of 68.4 billion won and 1.1 billion won, respectively, in the KOSDAQ market, while foreign investors alone have been net sellers of 58.7 billion won. By trading type, combined arbitrage and non-arbitrage trades show a net selling position of 55 billion won.
