Director Jo Cheol-hyun of ‘Naratmalssami’ Passes Away… Aged 67
A Producer Who Has Translated Over 600 Foreign-Language Articles
Lee Jun-ik Leads the Way in Korean Historical Dramas

[Edaily Starin YUN GI BACK Reporter] Director Cho Cheol-hyun, who wrote the screenplay for the film “Sado” and directed “Naraetmalsami,” has passed away after a battle with cancer. He was 67. Director Cho Cheol-hyun. According to the film industry on the 8th, Director Cho passed away at 1 a.m. that day. The funeral hall has been set up in Room 303 of the Korea University Anam Hospital Funeral Home. It is reported that the deceased had been battling the disease since being diagnosed with bile duct cancer last February. Beginning in 1987, he worked as a translator of foreign films, translating approximately 600 titles. He later participated in film planning and production alongside Director Lee Jun-ik and the late CEO Jeong Seung-hye, spearheading various innovative endeavors in Korean cinema. The three were nicknamed “Liu Bei, Zhang Fei, and Guan Yu,” respectively, and Director Cho was known as the “Guan Yu” of the film industry. Director Jo participated in the planning, production, and screenwriting of numerous works, including *Spy Lee Cheol-jin*, *The Anarchist*, *The Battle of Hwangsanbeol*, *My Love from the Past*, *Like the Moon Riding the Clouds*, *Pyongyang Fortress*, and *Sado*. In particular, drawing on his extensive reading and insights into history, he continued to collaborate with Director Lee Jun-ik on historical dramas. For *Sado*, he received the Screenplay Award at the 35th Korean Film Critics Association Awards, the 2nd Korean Film Producers Association Awards, and the 21st Chunsa Film Festival. He served as director, screenwriter, and adapter for *The King’s Letters*, and also participated in the planning and screenwriting of *Dream of the Peach Blossom Spring*. The film industry remembers him as a filmmaker with a dignified yet unassuming character and profound insight. He was a senior figure respected by his juniors and a key contributor to the planning and storytelling of Korean historical dramas. The viewing will be held at 3:00 p.m. on the 9th, and the funeral procession will depart at 7:00 a.m. on the 10th. The burial will take place at Seoul Memorial Park.
