[Edaily Starin KIM HYUNSIK Reporter] "I approached this with a mindset focused on growth and tried my best to showcase what I do best." (Photo courtesy of Wake One)Seong Han-bin, leader of the boy group Zero Base One, made these remarks on the 12th while introducing his first mini-album, “DEAD:ALIVE,” at a press showcase held at Layers Studio 11 in Mapo-gu, Seoul. Seong Han-bin debuted in the music industry in 2023 as a member of ZERO BASE ONE, the debut group from Mnet’s “Boys Planet.” This marks his first solo album release. “It’s an honor just to be able to present a solo album,” Seong Han-bin said. “Since this is such a precious moment, I want to show everything I’ve prepared.” He continued, “My members, who are like family, cheered me on a lot. The team’s oldest member, Ji-woong, even sent a coffee truck to the music video set,” expressing his gratitude. “Dead Alive” is an album centered on the theme of “self-transcendence”—the process of breaking through the limitations that once confined him. The album features a total of eight tracks, including the title track “UNDEAD,” as well as “Killin’ Me,” “Insidious,” “3AM,” “Bloody Gravity,” “Other Side,” “Flash,” and “Steal the Thunder,” for a total of eight tracks. Seong Han-bin reflected on the preparation process, saying, “Since this is my first time preparing a solo album, it wasn’t easy. I had to find a direction different from what I’ve built up so far, which led me to think more deeply.” He continued, “After much deliberation, I chose ‘tattoos’ as a symbolic element to enhance the album’s immersive experience and incorporated them into the album logo and other elements.” Regarding the album’s message, he stated, “I tend to be timid, but I’ve taken on various challenges. I chose ‘self-transcendence’ as the theme to infuse my personality into the album and add authenticity.” (Photo: Wake One)The album’s title track, “Undead,” is a pop track featuring intense guitar riffs, a majestic choir, and a spectacularly unfolding drum line. It expresses a strong resolve to “willingly accept any pain or hardship” through music. Seong Han-bin said, “It’s the highlight of the album. It’s the song that best expresses the message of beautiful destruction and self-transcendence that this album conveys.” Reflecting on the recording process, he said, “Since I’ve mainly sung songs with a husky, soft voice that wraps listeners in warmth, it wasn’t easy to pull off a song with such an intense feel.” He then laughed and added, “For the first time, I felt like running away from the recording studio,” before continuing, “Overcoming those difficulties became an opportunity for growth, and thanks to that, I’ve gained the confidence to think, ‘I’ve become capable of singing songs like this now.’” He also touched on the performance preparation process. Seong Han-bin said, “I felt that existing reference material alone wasn’t enough to fully capture the performance, so I prepared by watching past music show performance videos of senior artists like SHINee’s Taemin, EXO’s Kai, and NCT’s Jaehyun.” He even chose NCT’s Jaehyun as his role model for his solo debut. Seong Han-bin revealed, “I want to become an artist with an aura who shines even when standing alone on stage, just like Senior Jaehyun.” (Photo: Wake One)Meanwhile, Zero Base One has wrapped up its 2-year, 6-month project activities as a 9-member group and made a fresh start as a 5-member group (Seong Han-bin, Kim Ji-woong, Seok Matthew, Kim Tae-rae, Park Geon-wook). The five members, having successfully extended their activities, kicked off the second chapter of their career last May with “Ascend-,” their first album following the group’s reorganization. Last month, members Seok Matthew and Park Geon-wook expanded the group’s scope by debuting as EMP, the group’s first subunit. Seong Han-bin is the first member of ZeroBaseOne to release a solo album—rather than a single—and embark on full-scale promotional activities. All tracks from this album will be released at 6:00 p.m. today via various online music platforms. Seong Han-bin stated, “I plan to balance my activities with ZeroBaseOne as a five-member group and my solo career moving forward,” adding, “I prepared this album ambitiously after much deep reflection. Since my success will enable the other members to perform even better in their future activities, I will work hard with a strong sense of responsibility.”
