DaewooEngineering&Construction’s ‘Carbon-Reduced High-Strength Concrete’ Credit Certification on Track
Greenhouse Gas Reduction Verification System Operated by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Estimated carbon reduction of 32,000 metric tons based on 300,000 cubic meters
Carbon Credits: Utilizing Carbon Market Trading and Offsetting Greenhouse Gas Emissions
[Edaily Reporter Ham Ji-Hyun ] DaewooEngineering&Construction(047040)announced on the 15th that its “carbon-reduced high-strength concrete” has passed the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry’s review for certification under its carbon reduction methodology and business plan for in-situ cast concrete. (Photo courtesy of DaewooEngineering&Construction) According to DaewooEngineering&Construction, the Carbon Reduction Certification is a system operated by the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry that verifies the greenhouse gas reduction effects of products and projects through a three-stage review process—including methodology certification, project proposal certification, and monitoring report certification—and issues carbon credits. DaewooEngineering&Construction has been pursuing certification for its “carbon-reducing high-strength concrete,” jointly developed with Halla Cement, and with the successful completion of this review, it has completed the key certification stages required for the issuance of carbon credits. The company plans to receive carbon credits after undergoing certification of the monitoring report.
The company explained, “This certification is highly significant because it was pursued based on professional consulting from Hanyang University’s Carbon-Neutral Smart Architecture Center and by utilizing construction and quality-related data accumulated at DaewooEngineering&Construction’s actual construction sites.” It added, “We focused on ensuring the objectivity and reliability of the certification by quantitatively calculating and verifying carbon reduction effects based on field validation data, while simultaneously demonstrating the effectiveness of carbon-reduction technologies applicable to actual construction sites.”
Based on the 300,000 cubic meters of carbon-reducing high-strength concrete applied at the site, carbon reductions of approximately 32,000 metric tons are expected. DaewooEngineering&Construction is considering plans to trade these carbon credits on the voluntary carbon market or use them to voluntarily offset greenhouse gas emissions generated at overseas project sites once it passes the review of the monitoring report and receives the carbon credits.
The government is also taking steps to establish an institutional framework, having announced the “Directions for Establishing a Korean-Style Voluntary Carbon Market” last April and pushing forward with the enactment of relevant laws and the establishment of a market within the Korea Exchange, with the goal of launching the market by the end of this year. DaewooEngineering&Construction plans to proactively respond to these policy directions and expand the environmental value of its domestically developed carbon reduction technologies to its global operations, thereby strengthening its global ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) management and its capacity to achieve carbon neutrality in overseas projects.
A DaewooEngineering&Construction official stated, “Passing the methodology certification and project proposal certification—key procedures for carbon reduction certification—is highly significant as it marks the completion of an important step toward objectively verifying the greenhouse gas reduction effects of our carbon reduction technology,” adding “Since we pursued this certification based on data accumulated from actual construction sites, we will promptly complete the remaining review of the monitoring report to become the first domestic construction company to secure carbon credits for on-site cast-in-place concrete and actively utilize them in our carbon neutrality efforts,” the official added.
