[Edaily Starin, Reporter Gim Ga Yeong ] SBS’s Friday-Saturday drama “Doctor X,” which recorded a viewership rating of 14.9% (Nielsen Korea/based on nationwide households) in just its second episode, has been embroiled in controversy for allegedly portraying medical staff as villains.
On the 15th, a person identified as “A,” who identified himself as an orthopedic surgeon, posted on social media requesting a broadcast review of “Doctor X.”
Mr. A explained his reason for requesting the review, stating, “The show repeatedly portrays ward rounds as unnecessary menial tasks, simplifies medical staff into incompetent villains, and ignores the uncertainties inherent in medical practice.” He added, “While I understand dramatic exaggeration, I believe this goes so far as to instill a false perception of medical reality.”
According to a photo released by Mr. A, he filed a request for a broadcast review with the Korea Communications Standards Commission on the 13th under the title “Distortion of Medical Reality and Portrayal of Medical Professionals.”
He stated, “Although I believe the likelihood of actual sanctions is low, I still felt it was necessary to raise the issue,” adding, “As an expert, I cannot simply stand by and watch as misconceptions take root.”
In response, SBS stated, “We have no separate position on this matter.”
“Doctor X: The Age of the White Mafia,” which premiered on the 9th, is an SBS Friday-Saturday drama featuring “Doctor X” Gye Su-jeong, a “crazy genius in the operating room” who shatters corruption with her brilliant surgical skills. The show, a refreshing medical noir, recorded a viewership rating of 14.9% after just two episodes and is currently airing to great popularity, ranking No. 1 globally on Netflix among non-English TV shows.
