Building on the Gangneung Autonomous Driving Pilot, Plans to Expand to Other Regions and Overseas
[Edaily Reporter Shin Yeong-bin ] LOTTE INNOVATE(286940)is partnering with Gangneung City to expand its artificial intelligence (AI)-based future mobility business. The plan is to develop and pilot mobility services tailored to tourist destinations and areas with limited transportation access, and to translate these results into actual business operations.
LOTTE INNOVATE announced on the 21st that it signed a “Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Mutual Cooperation to Establish the Foundation for a Leading AI Mobility City” with Gangneung City at its exhibition booth during the “2026 Gangneung ITS World Congress” on the 20th. The two parties will collaborate on identifying new business opportunities for the creation of the Gangneung AI Mobility City, developing and demonstrating customized services for tourist destinations and areas with limited public transportation access, and fostering a mobility industry ecosystem by leveraging the outcomes of the ITS World Congress.
LOTTE INNOVATE will provide the technology necessary for service development and pilot testing, while Gangneung City will provide administrative and institutional support to advance the project. In particular, they plan to develop service models that address mobility needs in areas with high tourist traffic and those with limited access to public transportation.
LOTTE INNOVATE has been operating autonomous driving services in Gangneung since January 2023. The company has also gained hands-on operational experience by operating autonomous shuttles and establishing control and reservation systems in locations such as Jeju and Gyeongju.
Building on this experience, the company plans to further refine its integrated mobility solutions by linking AI-based transportation technologies, such as next-generation Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS) and autonomous driving. It also intends to explore ways to expand the service model validated in Gangneung to other regions and overseas markets.
At a press conference on the 19th, LOTTE INNOVATE announced its goal of tripling its mobility business revenue by 2030 compared to current levels. The company is pursuing the transition of pilot projects into full-scale operations and expansion into overseas markets as its key growth strategies.
Kim Kyung-yeop, CEO of LOTTE INNOVATE, stated, “Based on LOTTE INNOVATE’s AI and autonomous driving technologies and business experience, we will contribute to the creation of the AI Mobility City that Gangneung City is striving to build.” He added, “We will translate the results of the pilot project into actual business operations to create new growth opportunities in the future mobility market.”
