[Edaily Starin Gim Ga Yeong Reporter] Yang Yoon-seok, Head of the News Division (Executive Vice President), has been appointed as the new president of SBS.
SBS announced, “We held a board of directors meeting on the 23rd and appointed Yang Yoon-seok, Head of the News Division (Executive Vice President), as the new President and CEO.” New President Yang’s official inauguration date is October 26.
Following his appointment, Yang Yun-seok, the new SBS President, presented a management goal of “becoming No. 1 in content competitiveness across all sectors and genres,” emphasizing, “Going forward, we will focus all our capabilities on securing content competitiveness to build an SBS that viewers, users, and platforms turn to first.”
He assessed that terrestrial broadcasters are currently facing a “crisis of survival” as stable revenue structures—such as advertising—have collapsed due to the rapidly changing media landscape, and he added that SBS must revive the pioneering spirit it had at its founding to overcome this crisis.
Newly appointed President Yang also promised, “We will align all of the company’s resources toward securing competitiveness—including by improving work processes and compensation systems—so that the efforts of SBS employees to overcome this crisis can lead to tangible results,” adding, “We will lay the groundwork to fully share the fruits of innovation with our employees.”
He went on to say, “Together with the new management team, we will develop specific tasks and implementation plans for SBS’s innovation and announce them next month on the 36th anniversary of the company’s founding,” expressing his ambition to “lay the foundation for SBS to endure for 50 or even 100 years through these innovations.”
Newly appointed President Yang Yoon-seok graduated from Seoul National University with a degree in political science and joined SBS in 1991—the year after the company’s founding—as a reporter in its first open recruitment class. He subsequently held key positions, including Tokyo correspondent, Director of the News Division, and Head of the Policy Team, and served as Secretary-General of the Korea Broadcasters Association from 2018 to 2020. He subsequently served as Head of the Media Policy Office at TY Holdings (2020–2024), Head of the Policy Office at SBS (2024), and Head of the News Division at SBS (2024–2026).
Meanwhile, SBS is gaining popularity among viewers by producing a wide variety of content in addition to news. Following SBS’s “Director Kim,” which recorded a 23.1% viewership rating (Nielsen Korea/nationwide household basis), the recently premiered “Doctor X” is also gaining popularity, reaching an 18.5% rating after just four episodes. In addition, the network is diversifying its content by producing numerous variety and documentary programs.
