Ahead of the broadcast of Episode 8 on the 31st, the “Doctor X” production team released stills from the episode. The photos show Gye Su-jeong facing a young patient. She wears a bewildered expression, seemingly taken aback by the young child hugging her. With her hands hesitating to embrace the child and a look of mixed emotions in her eyes, viewers are left wondering what kind of story will unfold between the two.
This episode depicts resident doctors staging a general strike in opposition to the expansion of medical school enrollment. As a high-risk surgery for a 10-year-old pediatric cancer patient—which urgently requires collaboration between general surgery and neurosurgery—faces the risk of indefinite postponement due to a healthcare staffing crisis, Gye Su-jeong steps forward to perform the surgery alone.
Above all, this surgery is intertwined with Gye Su-jeong’s hidden past. Previously, scenes were revealed showing Gye Su-jeong weeping bitterly upon witnessing the harrowing tragedy of Baraka (played by Jeon Ji-on), a young boy from a country torn by civil war whom she was ultimately unable to save. Attention is now focused on whether Gye Su-jeong, who lives with the scars of her past, will be able to overcome her trauma and successfully save this young life.
“Doctor X” features “Gye Su-jeong, the madwoman of the operating room,” who shatters injustice with nothing but her genius surgical skills. It is a drama featuring the cathartic medical noir of ‘Dr. X’s’ Gye Su-jeong. It is based on a Japanese drama of the same name. The series began with a viewership rating of 11.4% (Nielsen Korea/nationwide households) for its first episode, reached 19.5% in episode 6, and saw a slight drop to 16.5% in episode 7, which aired on the 30th.
Meanwhile, the previous episode drew attention by depicting the treatment of Oh Sang-beom (played by Ha Sung-kwang), a patient at Seonam Hospital—the drama’s setting—who had suffered for 46 years from a gunshot wound inflicted by martial law troops during the May 18 Democratization Movement.
