KTCorporation announced on the 1st that it participated in the “2026 Disaster Response Safe Korea Drill,” organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT, at its Guro Telecommunications Center in Seoul on the 30th of last month. The drill involved the Ministry of Science and ICT, as well as the military, police, fire department, KoreaElectricPower (KEPCO), local governments, and telecommunications carriers.
The drill was based on a scenario in which a drone attack and unauthorized intrusion led to explosions, fires, and power outages, causing both wired and wireless services to cease. Immediately after the incident occurred, KTCorporation activated its disaster response headquarters, shared on-site information with relevant agencies, and assessed the damage to telecommunications equipment and the impact on services. The company examined damage to power supply facilities, wireless networks, and transmission lines, as well as to telephone, internet, and IPTV services. Subsequently, the drill simulated the process of resuming services through emergency restoration and rerouting measures.
The drill also included measures to protect users. KTCorporation activated backup communication channels, such as disaster roaming and disaster Wi-Fi, and dispatched mobile base stations and power generation equipment to the scene. The company also tested a scenario in which small business owners, who faced payment difficulties due to communication outages, were able to continue accepting payments using mobile phone tethering.
KTCorporation reviewed its communication restoration system, which involves coordinated responses from the field, the situation room, and relevant agencies. The company plans to continue enhancing network stability and crisis response capabilities through realistic disaster drills.
Ji Young-geun, Senior Vice President and Head of the Seoul Metropolitan Area Gangnam Network Operations Headquarters within KTCorporation’s Network Division, stated, “Through this drill, we comprehensively reviewed our response system for rapidly restoring communication services in the event of a complex disaster,” adding, “KTCorporation will strengthen network stability and disaster response capabilities so that the public can use communication services with peace of mind.”
