Samsung's Jeon Young-hyun: "Discussing Long-Term Cooperation with NVIDIA on HBM4E, HBM5, and More"

Exclusive Meeting with CEO Jensen Huang on the Afternoon of the 8th Discussions Ranging from Next-Generation HBM Supply to Foundry Services "We Will Help NVIDIA Succeed as a Partner" "Grokdo is currently collaborating... Next-generation collaboration is also under discussion"

[Edaily Reporter Song Jae-min] Jeon Young-hyun, Head of Samsung Electronics’ Device Solutions (DS) Division (Vice Chairman), met with Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, to discuss ways to expand cooperation on High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and foundry services. The two companies reportedly exchanged views on a wide range of topics, including the supply of HBM4, as well as joint development of HBM4E, HBM5, and next-generation semiconductors as part of their mid- to long-term cooperation plans.

After meeting with CEO Huang for about 15 minutes at the Shilla Hotel’s Yeongbin Hall in Jung-gu, Seoul, on the 8th, Vice Chairman Jeon told reporters, “I had many good discussions with Jensen Huang,” adding, “We have been collaborating for a long time, but today’s meeting seemed to be the most productive one yet.”

He said, “In the short term, we discussed how to proceed with HBM4 and foundry cooperation, and in the medium to long term, we even talked about plans for joint development through mutual cooperation.”

He explained that discussions regarding next-generation HBM cooperation also took place, following Samsung Electronics’ recent shipment of HBM4 samples.

Vice Chairman Jeon said, “Starting this year, we must ensure sufficient supply of HBM4 and SOCAMM2,” adding, “We also had extensive discussions regarding long-term cooperation plans, including HBM4E, the foundry business, and HBM5, starting next year.”

He also mentioned the possibility of expanding cooperation beyond memory into the foundry sector.

He said, “We are currently collaborating on autonomous driving chips and NVIDIA’s AI accelerator chips using 4-nanometer and 8-nanometer processes,” adding, “We are also collaborating with Samsung Foundry on Grok, another NVIDIA accelerator, and are discussing cooperation for the next generation.” However, he clarified that no new projects had been added regarding autonomous driving chips.

When asked whether Samsung Electronics’ position was weakening in light of CEO Jensen Huang’s recent reference to SK Hynix as the “largest memory supplier,” he remained tight-lipped. “We will do our best,” he replied, adding, “We will show the results later.”

Regarding whether there is a long-term supply agreement between Samsung Electronics and NVIDIA, he refrained from specific comments, saying only, “As the best partner, we will do our utmost to help NVIDIA succeed.”

Meanwhile, following his meeting with the former vice chairman today, CEO Huang is scheduled to conclude his official itinerary with a roundtable discussion with domestic startups and depart for the UK tomorrow morning.
