Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, to Meet with Samsung, Naver, and Kakao on the 15th
AI-Driven Work Innovation Lecture for Samsung DX Employees
Follow-up Discussions with Kakao on ‘ChatGPT for Kakao’
Possibility of Cooperation Between Naver and AI Models/Infrastructure
Attention on Cooperation in South Korea’s Semiconductor, Platform, and Cloud Sectors
[Edaily Reporter Shin Young-bin] Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, will hold a series of meetings with major South Korean information technology (IT) companies on the 15th, effectively making it a one-day visit.
According to industry sources on the 11th, CEO Altman is expected to arrive in the afternoon of the 14th, carry out his main schedule on the 15th, and depart that evening. This marks his first visit in about eight months since October of last year. Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI (Photo: AFP) The main schedule is concentrated on the second day. CEO Altman will visit Samsung Electronics’ Suwon Digital City at 10 a.m. on the 15th to attend the “DX Insight Talk” for employees of the Device Experience (DX) division. The topic is “The Era of Working with AI.”
This visit comes as Samsung Electronics is in the process of fully implementing generative AI services in the workplace. Samsung Electronics is pursuing a plan to allow employees to select and utilize services such as ChatGPT, Google Gemini Enterprise, and Anthropic Claude based on the nature of their work.
It is reported that CEO Altman will deliver a lecture to Samsung employees on topics including the future direction of generative AI technology, workplace innovation, and industry transformation.
There is also speculation that he may meet with key executives at Samsung Electronics. Cooperation agendas spanning semiconductors, mobile, and the utilization of AI services could be on the table for discussion.
The groundwork for collaboration between Samsung and OpenAI was already laid last year through the “Stargate” project. In October of last year, OpenAI announced a strategic partnership with Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix to build global AI infrastructure.
The core of that partnership was cooperation on the supply of high-performance, low-power memory required for OpenAI’s large-scale AI data center projects. OpenAI has previously stated that the Stargate project could generate a monthly demand of 900,000 DRAM wafers.
Attention is focused on whether this visit to Korea will expand the scope of cooperation beyond the semiconductor supply chain to include internal business innovation at Samsung. For Samsung, this could also serve as an opportunity to fully launch experiments aimed at enhancing employee productivity and organizational execution by leveraging global AI models.
CEO Altman will also meet with Jeong Shin-ah, CEO of Kakao, and Choi Soo-yeon, CEO of Naver (#NAVER), on the same day.
Kakao and OpenAI announced their first strategic partnership in South Korea last February. They have been working to develop AI services tailored to Korean users by integrating OpenAI’s technology into Kakao’s services, as well as exploring ways to incorporate OpenAI technology into Kakao’s core services, such as its AI agent service and KakaoTalk.
The main agenda item for this meeting is expected to be the enhancement of “ChatGPT for Kakao,” which utilizes ChatGPT within KakaoTalk. By linking KakaoTalk’s conversational context with OpenAI models, the scope of AI agent applications could expand across everyday service touchpoints such as search, recommendations, reservations, and commerce.
Given that Kakao has recently been strengthening the integration of AI agents with commerce, there is also keen interest in whether additional collaboration plans will emerge.
CEO Altman is also expected to visit Naver’s second headquarters, “1784.” 1784 serves as a testbed where Naver applies robotics, AI, cloud, and digital twin technologies to an actual workspace, drawing attention to potential collaboration between the two companies regarding AI infrastructure and services.
The meeting with Naver is seen as a strong indication of potential new collaboration. There is speculation that the two companies may explore new areas of cooperation based on the hyper-scale AI model HyperClova X, Naver Cloud, and data center capabilities.
