[Edaily Reporter Song Jae-min] LG Electronics is moving to build dedicated infrastructure for the training and validation of its humanoid robot, "LG Cloid." As competition in physical AI intensifies, the company is accelerating efforts to secure robot data and strengthen its training capabilities.

According to industry sources on the 11th, LG Electronics is constructing a robot data factory with a total floor area of approximately 33,000 square meters (about 10,000 pyeong) at its Yangjae R&D Campus in Seocho-gu, Seoul. Operations are scheduled to begin as early as July with the deployment of CLOi, and the company plans to expand the number of robots to several hundred units within the year, while also considering future investments worth tens of billions of won.

The facility will serve as a space where humanoid robots perform various tasks in real-world environments to generate data, which will then be used for training and validation. It will play a key role in accumulating behavioral data and refining AI models to enable robots to act like humans in the real world.

"LG Cloid," currently under development by LG Electronics, is a humanoid robot designed for home environments. Equipped with a head, two arms, and a wheeled lower body, it is designed to perform various tasks—such as picking up or organizing objects—based on its height-adjustable feature and multi-jointed arm structure.

Recently, global tech giants have been focusing on developing physical AI that acts in the real world, moving beyond generative AI. Since humanoid robots require complex capabilities—such as language understanding, mobility, object manipulation, and situational awareness—large-scale training with real-world data is essential. The industry views robot data factories as the key infrastructure that will determine future competitiveness in physical AI.

LG Electronics is accelerating the growth of its robotics business by expanding its core component business, such as actuators, alongside its finished robot products. Actuators are considered key components that control a robot’s joints and movements. The company is also entering the robot component market under its own actuator brand.

LG Electronics has also recently been focusing on expanding cooperation in the physical AI sector. LG Group Chairman Koo Kwang-mo recently met with Jensen Huang, CEO of NVIDIA, who was visiting South Korea, to discuss AI collaboration plans. The industry views LG Electronics as accelerating the establishment of a physical AI ecosystem centered on CLOID, encompassing finished robot products, core components, and AI platforms.
