Three Billion Signs Contract with Seoul Asan Hospital for Genomic Analysis under the K-gNBS Project
Supported by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency and conducted by Seoul Asan Medical Center
Korea's First Newborn Screening Project Utilizing WGS
[Edaily Reporter Kim Seung-kwon] #ThreeBillion, an AI-based rare disease diagnostics company, announced on the 15th that it will participate as a contract provider for genomic analysis and variant interpretation in the "Whole-Genome Sequencing-Based Newborn Screening (K-gNBS) Project" conducted by Asan Medical Center in Seoul.
K-gNBS is a research project for newborn genetic screening supported by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA), with Professor Lee Beom-hee’s team at Seoul Asan Hospital serving as the lead institution overseeing the entire project. The K-gNBS project aims to utilize whole-genome sequencing (WGS) to identify risks for approximately 500 rare diseases at the newborn stage and verify their clinical applicability.
Under this agreement, Three Billion will perform whole-genome screening tests on newborns and provide test result reports. The project will run for three years from 2026 to 2028, with a total of 1,800 tests planned.
Through this participation, Three Billion plans to accumulate clinical experience in the field of genome-based newborn screening in Korea and strengthen the technical and operational capabilities necessary for the future establishment and promotion of the domestic gNBS (Genomic Newborn Screening) system.
