Choi Tae-won Breaks Down the 'Specs' Barrier… Recruiting Talent with the 'Three Key Strengths' That AI Lacks

Build Your 'Thinking, Adaptation, and Empathy' Muscles… Choi Tae-won’s Approach to AI Talent: 'Competence Over Academic Background' Educational Requirements Completely Eliminated for Ongoing Recruitment of New Hires Chairman Choi Tae-won Launches SK Group’s ‘AX Drive’… Innovation in Hiring Improving Recruitment and Organizational Operations… Moving to Secure AI Competitiveness

[Edaily Reporter Kim So-yeon] SK Hynix’s decision to completely eliminate academic requirements for its rolling recruitment of new employees stems from the belief that, in the age of artificial intelligence (AI), competencies are more important than academic credentials. This move carries significance beyond a simple overhaul of the hiring system; it is interpreted as an extension of the talent acquisition strategy for the AI era that SK Group Chairman Choi Tae-won has long emphasized.

Chairman Choi has recently emphasized the importance of three core competencies that future talent must possess: “thinking muscles” for asking questions and delving into the essence of issues; “adaptability muscles” for responding agilely to changes in the technological landscape; and “empathy muscles” for understanding diversity and collaborating flexibly.

An SK Hynix official explained, “In the rapidly changing AI environment, the competitiveness of future talent cannot be explained solely by specific degrees or standardized qualifications,” adding, “We have innovated our hiring criteria to identify talent capable of creatively solving complex problems.”

Chairman Choi believes that as the focus of production shifts from products to intelligence, the traditional model of talent is no longer valid. In particular, he has consistently emphasized that in the AI era, the ability to ask good questions is more important than the ability to find the right answer. This change in recruitment policy is interpreted as a commitment to accelerate talent acquisition by focusing on practical job competencies and growth potential rather than academic credentials.

Previously, Chairman Choi declared the acceleration of AI Transformation (AX) at the New Icheon Forum held at the SKMS Research Institute in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, from the 11th to the 13th. The plan is to drive AX across the entire group to secure future competitiveness.

As the first step in AX, Chairman Choi stated, “First, we must know exactly what we are doing,” adding, “It is crucial to precisely define our work and determine what and how we will innovate through AI.” He then proposed a “one person, one agent” strategy, in which all employees utilize personalized AI assistants tailored to their specific job duties.

The future talent SK seeks can be summarized as individuals capable of accurately defining problems and designing new systems by appropriately deploying and coordinating AI. Chairman Choi stated, “Although more than 90% of our employees are already using AI, we need AI that can link our work to the performance of the entire organization,” adding, “We will deploy dozens of Chairman Choi avatars into each company to listen to employees’ stories and work and communicate with other agents.”

As the perspective on talent shifts, SK Group’s organizational operations are also evolving. On the 16th, SK Telecom announced its “AX Innovation 2.0” plan, which translates Chairman Choi’s AX vision into an organizational framework. The core of this initiative is redefining AI not merely as a supporting tool, but as a collaborative work partner.

Accordingly, the company has decided to assign official employee numbers (No. 26), departments, job titles, and authority to AI agents operating within the company. AI agents will also be managed in a manner similar to human employees, from hiring to termination, and the company plans to establish a governance system—including data and security access permissions—to support this.

SK Group is embarking on a comprehensive overhaul to adapt to the AI era, from recruitment to organizational operations. Industry observers view SK Hynix’s decision to eliminate academic background requirements as a symbolic measure that goes beyond a simple change in hiring policies, representing a shift in talent standards for the AI era. An industry official stated, “We are entering an era where a company’s competitiveness is determined not by academic background or credentials, but by the ability to create new value through the use of AI.”
