Competition Heats Up for 'Waterproofing Materials,' a Key Technology for Rooftop Gardens

Paint Industry Battles for Leadership in the Green Roof Trend Suitable for the installation of landscaping features and pedestrian spaces Increasing Number of Launches of Concealed Waterproofing Product Lines

[Edaily Reporter Kim Se-yeon ] Ahead of the summer torrential rain season, the paint industry is stepping up competition in the rooftop waterproofing materials market. With an increasing number of buildings creating rooftop gardens to save energy and expand urban green spaces, companies are launching a series of new, high-performance waterproofing products.

According to industry sources on the 28th, major paint companies such as SamhwaPaintIndustrial(000390)(formerly Samhwa Paint Industry) and NOROO PAINT(090350) have recently expanded their lineups of non-exposed waterproofing materials suitable for rooftop greening as they seek to capture market share. Non-exposed waterproofing involves applying a layer of concrete mortar or similar material over the waterproofing layer so that it remains hidden from view. Unlike exposed waterproofing materials, which are typically applied directly to the roof deck, concealed waterproofing is characterized by its superior durability, as the waterproofing layer is protected from UV rays and external impacts. In particular, the concealed waterproofing method is primarily used when creating rooftop gardens or recreational spaces, as soil, landscaping features, and walkways are installed on top of the waterproofing layer.

SP SAMHWA recently launched a new concealed-type product under its “Bangsue Ace” waterproofing brand. This product is designed to block moisture penetration through microscopic cracks while enhancing water resistance, durability, and adhesion. It has also secured eco-friendliness by obtaining certifications such as the Environmental Label.

NOROO PAINT, which holds the highest market share in the domestic waterproofing materials market, is currently preparing to launch “NOROO Heat-Shield Water-Based Waterproofing Material,” which combines heat-shielding capabilities to reduce rooftop temperature rises caused by sunlight with waterproofing functions to prevent rainwater penetration. Previously, waterproofing and heat-shielding had to be performed separately, but this product is designed to provide both functions in a single solution. In addition, the company has introduced a composite waterproofing system that combines waterproofing materials with waterproofing sheets. This system features a liquid waterproofing material that fills microscopic cracks on building surfaces, while the waterproofing sheet provides an additional barrier against moisture penetration, thereby reducing the risk of leaks. This approach enhances waterproofing reliability and long-term durability.

Through its line of eco-friendly urethane waterproofing materials, KCC Corporation provides waterproofing solutions suitable for rooftops, parking lots, and underground structures. Representative rooftop waterproofing products include the Spotan KS1 series and the Monotan single-component exposed waterproofing material. The company is also targeting the waterproofing market with its water-based, eco-friendly product line, which includes “Supuro Elastic Waterproofing Material,” “Supuro Single Waterproofing Material,” and “Supuro Waterproofing Cream.”

The paint industry is focusing its efforts on developing waterproofing materials because the rooftop greening market is steadily expanding. According to the National Institute of Horticultural and Special Crops Science at the Rural Development Administration, homes with rooftop greening can save an average of 0.1 kWh of energy per day compared to standard concrete homes. The soil layer also absorbs sound waves, helping to reduce urban noise.

Local governments are also expanding their rooftop greening initiatives. The Seoul Metropolitan Government continues to promote rooftop greening projects that transform building rooftops into green spaces; from 2012 through last year, 257 rooftop green spaces were created in the Seoul area alone.

An industry official stated, “There is a market trend of paying close attention to building exteriors, much like decorating a product to increase its value. Creating rooftop gardens is part of this trend,” adding, “In line with this, demand for related paint and waterproofing products is also on the rise.”
