This contest was sponsored by GS Retail and the Korea Consumer Agency and organized by the Korea Consumer Education Support Center. This year’s contest focused on protecting consumer rights under the theme “The Age of Algorithms: Redefining Consumer Rights.”

Held over two weeks last month, the contest attracted a total of 523 undergraduate and graduate students, who submitted 209 pieces of content, including 81 videos and 128 card news posts.

Following the judging process, a total of 14 winning entries were selected, including: △ one team for the Daesang (Fair Trade Commission Chairman’s Award); △ one team each for the Excellence Award (Korea Consumer Agency Director’s Award and GS Retail Home Shopping BU Head’s Award); and △ several teams for the Excellence Award, Encouragement Award, and Creator Award. The winning teams will receive prize money totaling 10 million won.

The Daesang winner was “Did You Get Taken Over by a Recommendation Algorithm After Just One Search?” (Min So-eun and Jo Seo-yoon), which entertainingly explored the impact of recommendation algorithms on consumer choices.

The First Prize went to “[Verdict] In the Age of Algorithms, Who Is the Master of Choice?” (Shin Ji-eun and three others), which used the example of job seekers to illustrate the “filter bubble” phenomenon, where algorithms provide only biased information.

Heo Nam-jun, Head of the Business Support Division at GS Retail, stated, “In today’s world, where AI and algorithmic technologies influence the entire consumer environment, it has become increasingly important to raise awareness and understanding of consumer rights.” He added, “We will continue to carry out various ESG activities to promote consumer rights and foster a healthy digital consumption culture.”
