On the 25th, posts unrelated to Mrs. Kim—including a photo of a woman posing against a sunset backdrop on a mountaintop—appeared on her personal Facebook account, which she had been using since before former President Yoon’s election. Mrs. Kim’s legal team explained to E-Daily, “The First Lady account used during the presidential election has already been closed.” (Photo: Screenshot from Kim Geon-hee’s Facebook) This Facebook account is reportedly her main account, which she had been using since 2015—before former President Yoon’s election—to communicate with acquaintances with whom she has close ties.
Mrs. Kim Geon-hee, who was indicted and detained on charges including stock price manipulation at DEUTSCH MOTORS INC. and allegations of soliciting favors and accepting bribes from the Unification Church, is seen attending her first trial held on the afternoon of September 24 at the Seoul Central District Court in Seocho-gu, Seoul. (Photo: Joint Press Corps) Meanwhile, Ms. Kim was indicted on charges including stock price manipulation involving DEUTSCH MOTORS INC.(067990) and was found guilty in both the first and second trials. In January of last year, Criminal Division 27 of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Woo In-sung) found her guilty of brokerage bribery under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes for accepting money and valuables from the Unification Church and sentenced her to one year and eight months in prison. At that time, she was acquitted of charges of violating the Capital Markets Act related to the manipulation of DEUTSCH MOTORS INC.’s stock price.
However, on April 28 of this year, the 15-2 Criminal Division of the Seoul High Court (Presiding Judge Shin Jong-oh) overturned the lower court’s ruling on appeal and sentenced him to four years in prison, a fine of 50 million won, and forfeiture of 20.94 million won. The appellate court overturned the first-instance court’s acquittal on the charges of stock price manipulation involving DEUTSCH MOTORS INC., finding her guilty based on a finding of constructive intent and joint criminal liability. She was also found guilty of an additional charge of accepting a Chanel handbag worth 8.02 million won from the side of Geonjin Beopsa of the Unification Church in April 2022. Both Ms. Kim’s legal team and the special prosecutor’s office have appealed the second-instance ruling, and the case is currently assigned to the Second Division of the Supreme Court (Presiding Justice Park Young-jae) and is under review.
Mrs. Kim is awaiting sentencing in another case on the 26th. The 21st Criminal Division of the Seoul Central District Court (Presiding Judge Jo Sun-pyo) will deliver its first-instance verdict at 2:00 p.m. that day on charges of brokerage of bribes under the Act on the Aggravated Punishment of Specific Crimes, for which Mrs. Kim was indicted in connection with the so-called “sale of public office” allegations.
Mrs. Kim is accused of, among other things, accepting gifts worth 103.8 million won—including a Van Cleef & Arpels necklace—from Lee Bong-gwan, chairman of SEOHEE CONSTRUCTION CO., LTD., in exchange for using her status as the president’s spouse to solicit favors regarding public office appointments and business matters. In addition, she is accused of accepting a gold tortoise and a replica of the “Sehan-do” painting (worth 2.65 million won) from former National Education Commission Chairman Lee Bae-yong; a Vacheron Constantin wristwatch (worth 39.9 million won) from robot dog entrepreneur Seo Seong-bin; and a Dior handbag from Pastor Choi Jae-young. Special Prosecutor Min Jung-ki’s team sought a prison sentence of 7 years and 6 months for Mrs. Kim at the final hearing last month.
