Secretary-General Jang Gwang-soo (Photo: Korean Film Council) In an official statement released on the 1st, the KOFIC stated, “At the 12th regular committee meeting of 2026, held on the 26th of last month, the committee approved the motion to appoint Jang Gwang-soo as the new Secretary-General.” Secretary General Jang joined the Korean Film Promotion Corporation in 1993 and has been involved in the film industry for 33 years. He has accumulated extensive practical experience working not only at the KOFIC headquarters but also at various affiliated institutions, including the Namyangju Film Studio and the Korean Film Academy. Starting his career at the Namyangju Comprehensive Film Studio, he served as head of the sound recording team and director of the Namyangju Comprehensive Film Studio, dedicating himself to establishing the foundation for Korean film production and managing filming infrastructure. He subsequently served as head of the Creative Support Team and director of the Support Programs Division, leading various initiatives to support creators, revitalize the independent and art film ecosystem, and broaden the base of film culture. Secretary-General Jang stated, “I will steer the Secretariat steadily to turn the crisis facing the film industry into an opportunity and ensure the Committee grows into a comprehensive support organization for film and video.” He added, “Drawing on my experience across production sites and support programs, I will communicate closely with the film community to resolve pressing issues facing the Korean film industry and lay the groundwork for its sustainable development.” The Korean Film Council (KOFIC) is a public institution established to promote the qualitative improvement of Korean cinema and the advancement of the Korean film industry, having been entrusted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism with the role of providing support for the film sector. Secretary-General Jang’s term is one year, ending on July 1 of next year, and he may be reappointed for successive one-year terms in accordance with relevant regulations.
