The company plans to use this as an opportunity to accelerate the expansion of the APV ecosystem and its penetration of the next-generation video standards market.
This licensing agreement is particularly significant because it comes at a time when major global companies such as SamsungElectronics, Google, and Qualcomm are forming a competitive landscape against Apple and driving the expansion of the APV ecosystem. Notably, Company G—a major North American tech firm that has collaborated with Chips&Media, Inc. for a long time—has decided to adopt “WAVE-P” for its next-generation devices.
APV is a next-generation professional video codec whose ecosystem is expanding with the participation of global companies such as SamsungElectronics, Google, and Qualcomm. The company expects this agreement to further strengthen APV’s competitiveness in the professional video market, which has been dominated by Apple’s “ProRes.”
WAVE-P is a professional video processing IP that utilizes a multi-core architecture to support ultra-high-resolution video recording and editing at up to 8K 120fps. The company explained that it significantly improves video processing performance compared to existing single-core-based technologies and is optimized for high-quality video production environments by supporting 12-bit high-bit-depth video processing.
Chips&Media, Inc. stated that this technology is scheduled to be integrated into its clients’ next-generation flagship products within the next two to three years, and the company plans to expand its application beyond mobile devices into the professional video equipment market, including broadcast equipment and mirrorless cameras.
Kim Sang-hyun, CEO of Chips&Media, Inc., stated, “If SamsungElectronics and Qualcomm opened the first door to challenge Apple’s ProRes, this agreement is a meaningful achievement that opens the second door to fully expand the APV ecosystem in collaboration with major North American tech partners.” He added, “As we are also in discussions with major Japanese camera manufacturers regarding technology adoption, we will strive to ensure that APV establishes itself as the new standard in the global video market.”
