(Photo courtesy of Solus Advanced Materials) Solus Advanced Materials announced on the 2nd that it expects the sales share of its high-end battery foil products—including the high-strength, high-elongation “SR” and the medium-strength “MTS”—to increase from 28% last year to approximately 40% this year. Battery foil is a core material used as the anode current collector in electric vehicle batteries, serving to support the electrode and facilitate the flow of current. As the electric vehicle battery market shifts toward high-performance and high-capacity batteries, quality standards for battery foil—including thickness, strength, elongation, and uniformity—are also trending upward. Solus Advanced Materials’ high-end battery foil is characterized by enhanced strength and elongation compared to standard products and is recognized as a product line that meets the quality requirements of high-performance battery manufacturing processes. The high-strength, high-elongation battery foil “SR” improves processability based on its high strength prior to heat treatment, and after heat treatment, its excellent elongation characteristics contribute to enhanced battery life and stability. It can be applied to various battery form factors, including cylindrical and prismatic types, and this technology is reportedly achievable by only a handful of companies in the global market. The medium-strength battery foil ‘MTS’ strikes a balance between strength and elongation, with its key strength being its ability to maintain cell performance while improving process efficiency. The company is set to begin supplying this product to a global battery manufacturer based in Europe in the second half of this year. The company’s strategy is to strengthen the profitability of its battery foil business by improving its product mix to focus on high-value-added products. It plans to further increase the proportion of high-end battery foil next year by expanding the supply of products optimized for each customer’s battery specifications and manufacturing processes. A company official stated, “As the battery market enters a mature phase, product quality and the ability to provide customized solutions for customers are emerging as key competitive factors, surpassing production capacity,” adding, “We are seeing a trend where demand for high-end products, currently centered in North America, is spreading to the European market as well.”
