Dexter studios Co., Ltd. Secures Patent for 'Actor Performance Data Editing Technology'… Enables Precise Adjustments to Facial Expressions Only
Development of 4D Face Mesh-Based Editing Technology
Reflecting the Director’s Vision and Improving Production Efficiency
Ability to Insert and Adjust Specific Facial Expressions in Frames
Expected to Reduce Reshoot Costs and Time
[Edaily Reporter Hyera Lee ] #Dexter studios Co., Ltd. announced on the 3rd that it has obtained a patent for 4D facial mesh-based video generation technology that allows for precise adjustments to facial expressions while preserving head movements in an actor’s motion capture data. 4D facial mesh image. This patent pertains to a “method for generating digital video through 4D mesh sequence editing that preserves natural head movements.” Its key feature is the ability to edit only facial expressions to the desired form—while preserving movements such as nodding or tilting the head—from dynamic 3D facial data obtained by 3D scanning an actor’s performance for visual effects (VFX) and animation production. Existing 4D facial mesh editing methods had the limitation that performance information—such as the actor’s head movements—was lost during the “mesh stabilization” process required to modify facial expressions. This new technology separates head movements from facial expressions for processing, enabling precise adjustments to facial expressions while preserving the actor’s expressiveness. Dexter studios Co., Ltd. explained that this allows users to insert desired expressions into specific frames or modify and correct existing expressions, enabling a more precise realization of the director’s vision and reducing production costs and time associated with reshoots or supplementary filming for certain scenes. Additionally, the technology can be utilized in methods where AI generates additional performance data based on existing high-precision performance data. Dexter studios Co., Ltd. expects this technology to be applied to various content production fields—such as digital human creation, performance capture-based animation, and facial animation retargeting—contributing to the creation of realistic characters and improved production efficiency. Song Jae-won, Head of Dexter studios Co., Ltd.’s R&D Institute, stated, “Dexter studios Co., Ltd. is building a next-generation VFX production pipeline by continuously developing AI-based VFX technologies such as AI re-aging and face swapping,” adding, “We are focusing on advancing AI VFX technology to a level of sophistication and efficiency suitable for commercial content production.”
