Global Tech Companies Post Record Quarterly Operating Profits
Estimated to Exceed 100 Trillion Won Excluding Provisions for Performance Bonuses
[E-Daily Reporter JAEMIN SONG ] SamsungElectronics has once again set a new record for quarterly earnings, driven by the artificial intelligence (AI) memory supercycle. The company surpassed 170 trillion won in revenue and 80 trillion won in operating profit, achieving results that are virtually unprecedented in the history of global corporations.
(Photo = E-Daily DB Inc.) SamsungElectronics announced on the 7th that its preliminary second-quarter results for this year showed revenue of 171 trillion won and operating profit of 89.4 trillion won.
Operating profit rose 56.2% from the previous quarter (57.23 trillion won) and surged 1,810.3% compared to the same period last year (4.68 trillion won). Revenue also rose 27.7% from the previous quarter (133.87 trillion won) and 129.3% from the same period last year (74.57 trillion won), setting a new all-time quarterly record.
Notably, this operating profit exceeds the approximately 81.9 trillion won in operating profit recorded by NVIDIA in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027 (February–April 2026). SamsungElectronics has set a new record for quarterly operating profit among global tech companies. In particular, when accounting for the provision (estimated at approximately 15 trillion won) set aside to fund performance bonuses agreed upon in the labor-management agreement, the actual operating profit is estimated to have exceeded 100 trillion won.
SamsungElectronics does not disclose division-level results in its preliminary earnings announcements. However, the securities industry believes that the Semiconductor (DS) division was the primary driver of these results.
In particular, analysts note that profitability in the memory business improved significantly due to steadily rising demand for High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) driven by expanded investment in AI infrastructure, coupled with continued strength in general-purpose memory prices. Additionally, a narrowing of losses in the foundry (semiconductor contract manufacturing) business and favorable exchange rates are also seen as contributing to the improved performance.
The market is forecasting that, as the AI memory-led supercycle continues, the trend of improved earnings is likely to persist into the second half of the year.
