[E-Daily Reporter NA EUN-KYUNG ] Bukwang Pharmaceutical ( BukwangPharmaceutical(003000)) announced on the 16th that its liver disease treatment “Regadex” (active ingredients: ursodeoxycholic acid and biphenyldimethyldicarboxylate) ranked second in the market for combination drugs for liver disease, based on prescription volume, just one year after its launch.
According to the pharmaceutical market research firm UBIST, the cumulative prescription volume for Regadex in the first half of this year (January–June) totaled 6.98 million tablets. This ranks it second in the liver disease combination therapy market based on prescription volume for the first half of the year. Since its launch in June of last year, the cumulative prescription volume has reached 11.76 million tablets.
Regadex is the first combination drug to expand the lineup of BukwangPharmaceutical’s liver disease treatment “Regalon” (active ingredient: silymarin), and its main active ingredients are ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and diphenyl dimethyl dicarboxylate (DDB).
UDCA helps improve aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, while DDB is known to reduce alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels. AST and ALT are key liver function markers used to assess the extent of liver cell damage.
Since the launch of Regadex, BukwangPharmaceutical has pursued a strategy of prescribing it in combination with Regalon. Prescribing both products together allows for the combined use of key ingredients used in the treatment of liver disease, such as silymarin, UDCA, and DDB, and under current national health insurance reimbursement criteria, coverage is available for up to two liver disease medications.
A company official stated, “As a result of our continued strategy of proposing Regadex alongside Regalon, prescriptions have expanded rapidly, particularly in clinics, and we have maintained growth in the hospital market as well, ranking second in the market in terms of prescription volume just one year after launch.” The official added, “By the second anniversary of the launch, we aim to become the market leader in terms of prescription volume and will continue to strengthen our competitiveness.”
