Analysis of the Impact of the Sharp Rise in Trading Volume Amid a Bull Market
[Edaily Reporter Kwon Oh Seok ] As the KOSPI fluctuated around the 9,000 mark and hit a record high in the second quarter of this year, the earnings of major domestic securities firms are expected to improve significantly, driven by increased trading volume. On the 16th, when the KOSPI fell below the 7,000 mark again, the closing prices of the KOSPI and KOSDAQ were displayed on a scoreboard in the Hana Bank trading room in Jung-gu, Seoul. (Photo = Yonhap News) According to the financial investment industry on the 19th, the consensus estimate for second-quarter consolidated operating profit for the five major securities firms— MIRAE ASSET SECURITIES(006800), KOREA INVESTMENT HOLDINGS(071050), SamsungSecurities(016360), NH INVESTMENT & SECURITIES(005940), and KIWOOM Securities(039490)—totaled 5.1278 trillion won. This figure is based on a compilation of estimates provided by the research centers of each securities firm over the past month. Net income for the same period is expected to reach approximately 3.7482 trillion won. This represents a year-over-year increase of 141.3% in operating profit and 114.4% in net income. The industry consensus is that this is particularly significant, as the results are expected to surpass those of the first quarter, which had already set a record for the best quarterly performance. Growth is also expected to continue compared to the previous quarter. Operating profit and net profit for the five firms are estimated to increase by 17.9% and 12.8%, respectively. Among the securities firms, MIRAE ASSET SECURITIES stands out for the magnitude of its earnings improvement. Its second-quarter operating profit is projected to reach 2.0405 trillion won, a 48.4% increase from the previous quarter, and the firm is expected to become the first in the industry to achieve “2 trillion won in operating profit.” In particular, MIRAE ASSET SECURITIES’ results are expected to be significantly boosted by the rise in the value of its stake in SpaceX. SamsungSecurities is estimated to see a 13.7% increase to 693.1 billion won, NH INVESTMENT & SECURITIES a 4.3% increase to 663.8 billion won, and KIWOOM Securities a 9.9% increase to 682.6 billion won. In contrast, KOREA INVESTMENT HOLDINGS is projected to see a 5.3% decrease from the previous quarter to 1.0478 trillion won. This improvement in performance is largely driven by the sharp rise in trading volume resulting from the booming stock market. In the second quarter, the KOSPI rose by approximately 68% and hit an all-time high of 9,385 during intraday trading. Trading volume also increased significantly. The average daily trading volume on the KOSPI and KOSDAQ markets reached 55.926 trillion won, a 27.6% increase compared to the first quarter (43.826 trillion won). Liquidity expanded rapidly, with daily trading volume exceeding 92 trillion won on May 29. As a result, brokerage revenues are expected to rise significantly.
