(Photo: Netflix, Hitoshi Iwaaki, Kodansha) Netflix announced on the 23rd that it has confirmed production of the Japanese original series “Parasyte: Tamiya,” targeting a release next year. Following “Parasyte: The Gray,” which was released last year, Director Yeon Sang-ho and production company Wowpoint are teaming up once again to present a new “Parasyte” project. This series features Ryoko Tamiya, one of the original manga’s iconic characters, as the protagonist. It will unfold a story distinct from the original through Tamiya’s perspective—a parasite who has infiltrated human society and grapples with the possibility of coexistence with humans. The project is drawing attention as an original series that goes beyond a simple spin-off to further expand the “Parasyte” universe. Director Yeon Sang-ho is in charge of planning and screenwriting, with writer Ryu Yong-jae—who previously collaborated on *Parasyte: The Gray*—serving as co-writer. Directing duties will be shared by Kensaku Kakimoto (*Glass Heart*) and Kazuhiro Nakagawa (*Double*), continuing the collaboration between Korean and Japanese production teams. Actress Shiori Kutsuna has been cast as Ryoko Tamiya. She is set to portray Tamiya’s complex inner world as she transforms into a being that grapples with the coexistence of humans and parasites. Director Yeon Sang-ho expressed his anticipation, stating, “She has convincingly portrayed the process by which a non-human being comes to understand both humans and herself.” Director Yeon stated, “‘Parasyte: Tamiya’ is a new work with a distinct tone from previous live-action films, the anime, and ‘Parasyte: The Gray,’” adding, “Based on respect for the original work, I wanted to present yet another ‘Parasyte’ story.” Previously, *Parasyte: The Gray* garnered global acclaim upon its release, ranking in Netflix’s Top 10 Global Non-English TV Series for four consecutive weeks and topping the charts in 34 countries and regions. Attention is now focused on whether its sequel, *Parasyte: Tamiya*, will be able to continue this box office momentum.
