[Edaily Reporter JAEMIN SONG ] LGELECTRONICS is creating a large-scale curved display using 72 55-inch organic light-emitting diode (OLED) screens to bring an installation art piece at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art to life.

LGELECTRONICS announced on the 30th that it will hold the second exhibition in the “MMCA×LG OLED Series” at “Seoul Box” in the Seoul branch of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA) in Jongno-gu, Seoul, from the 31st through November 29.

This exhibition features “Stubborn Rocks, Reckless Battles,” a large-scale installation by Berlin-based Korean-American artist Christine Sun Kim. The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the artist, and LGELECTRONICS collaborated on all aspects of the project, including the concept, spatial design, and technical implementation.

LGELECTRONICS created a large curved screen by connecting 72 55-inch OLED screens along one wall of Seoul Box. Since OLEDs emit light from each individual pixel, allowing for detailed rendering of black and color, they were utilized to reproduce the texture of drawings and the movement of animations on the screen.

The work was created based on the artist’s drawings, which reinterpret the movements of American Sign Language and “motion lines”—lines used to depict movement in classic comics—as a visual grammar. It is structured so that the images and linguistic rules on the screen constantly change, allowing visitors to appreciate the work as they follow the large curved screen.

LGELECTRONICS did not merely provide the display; it participated from the planning stage of the artwork. Working with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, LGELECTRONICS designed the screen layout, curvature, and video rendering methods to visualize the changes in images and language conceived by the artist in a way that aligns with the exhibition space’s structure.

Artist Kim Christine Sun has explored the structures and accessibility of language and communication through various media, including drawing, painting, installation, media art, and performance. She has presented works that combine graphic notation—a system for translating sound into visual language—with drawing, and has held solo exhibitions at institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Walker Art Center.

The “MMCA×LG OLED Series” is a collaborative project between the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art and LGELECTRONICS that uses OLED technology to bring contemporary artworks to life; this year marks its second edition.
