As Bond Market Influence Grows, Companies Keep a Close Eye on Workforce Shifts Amid Demand for Institutional-Level Asset Allocation
[Edaily Marketin Reporter LEE GEON-EOM ] As SK hynix(000660)begins recruiting professionals specializing in asset management, attention is focused on key players in the capital markets, including the securities industry in Yeouido and major pension funds. Backed by a massive cash reserve of 54 trillion won, SK hynix is emerging as a major player in the capital markets, and there are signs that professionals are looking to move from the financial sector to the asset management organizations of large conglomerates. (Photo = Yonhap News) According to the financial investment industry on the 30th, an atmosphere is developing both inside and outside the bond market where professionals are weighing whether to apply for SK hynix’s job opening for experienced finance team members. The roles in this recruitment include formulating asset allocation strategies through macroeconomic analysis and risk hedging. The key factor attracting managers’ attention is the ability to manage funds that surpass those of most financial institutions.
An investment banking (IB) industry official explained, “Since the focus is on book management and risk hedging, it appears they are seeking not only traditional credit managers but also individuals capable of viewing the market from multiple angles.” The official added, “Given that the company holds more cash than most regional banks, this could become a very attractive position if the company has formulated a plan to actively prepare for future capital management.”
There is also speculation that this opportunity could appeal to pension fund managers based in regional areas, largely due to the geographical advantage of working in the Seoul metropolitan area. Even if compensation is similar to their current jobs, the opportunity to relocate for work is seen as a positive factor. Managers who previously lived in the Gangnam area and commuted to Yeouido are also hopeful that this move will improve their work-life balance.
Furthermore, the government’s push to relocate major institutions, such as mutual aid associations, to regional areas further highlights the appeal of working in the Seoul metropolitan area. Earlier this March, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport requested data from mutual aid associations regarding the second phase of the plan to relocate public institutions to regional areas. The ministry plans to announce the list of institutions to be relocated and a roadmap by the end of this year and to begin the relocation process in earnest starting next year. Market speculation suggests that major mutual aid associations—including the Teachers’ Mutual Aid Association, the Civil Service Mutual Aid Association, the Military Mutual Aid Association, and the Police Mutual Aid Association—may relocate to Jeonju.
Another investment banking industry official stated, “Given that these institutions are known to seek not only credit products but also risk hedging and tactical asset allocation, interest among those working at these organizations is likely to be high,” adding, “For staff at pension funds or mutual aid associations located in regional areas, the fact that the workplace is in the Seoul metropolitan area could be an attractive factor.”
However, some argue that practical variables, such as compensation structures, must be carefully considered. They explain that for those accustomed to the financial sector’s unique compensation systems, employment status and performance-based pay structures could become practical factors influencing a job change. In particular, some suggest that actual compensation packages could vary significantly depending on how base pay and performance-based pay are structured compared to Yeouido.
Another executive in the investment banking industry pointed out, “Given that annual salary levels in Yeouido are not low, it may be difficult to find such positions attractive if they are contract roles with the same contractual structure,” adding, “However, if the position is a permanent role, that in itself can be a significant advantage.”
He further elaborated, “Given the uncertainty surrounding whether the semiconductor boom will continue, applicants may hesitate if they receive only short-term performance bonuses and their actual annual salary ends up being lower than what they would earn in Yeouido.”
Analysts suggest that the high level of interest in SK hynix among capital market participants stems from the company’s formidable financial strength and its correspondingly elevated standing in the market. As of the end of the first quarter of this year, SK hynix’s cash and cash equivalents totaled 54.3298 trillion won. The company is expanding its market influence by investing the massive surplus funds generated from operating activities heavily in short-term financial products and high-quality credit instruments.
In line with its status as a “major player” in the capital markets, the level of professional expertise required for its roles has also become more sophisticated. Job descriptions in recruitment postings include the execution of strategic asset allocation (SAA) and tactical asset allocation (TAA). The company requires performance management of direct and outsourced investments—including time deposits, government and public bonds, special-purpose bonds, corporate bonds, commercial paper (CP), and short-term notes—effectively demanding capabilities on par with those of institutional investors.
Meanwhile, SK hynix is cautious about interpretations that this signals a broader hiring drive. A company official drew a clear line, stating, “This is intended to reinforce the day-to-day operations of our existing finance organization and to replenish our workforce.”
