[Edaily Reporter SOYEON KIM ] LGELECTRONICS announced on the 19th that it has become the first in the industry to supply a smart telematics solution for vehicles, incorporating the latest 5G communication standard, to mass-produced models from European automakers. This strategy aims to solidify its leadership in the global automotive communications components market by targeting the Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) and Artificial Intelligence-Driven Vehicle (AIDV) markets.

LGELECTRONICS recently applied a smart telematics solution based on R16—the latest 5G communication standard—to mass-produced European vehicle models for the first time. This marks the industry’s first implementation of an R16-based automotive telematics solution in mass-produced European vehicles.

The product supplied this time was developed based on R16, the latest 5G standard specification from the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project). R16 is the second standard that enhances the performance and stability of R15, which focused on 5G commercialization. It supports ultra-reliable, ultra-low-latency communications that improve data transmission reliability and reduce latency compared to R15. The data error rate is 0.001%, and the data transmission latency between the telematics module and the base station is 0.001 seconds (1 ms)—representing 100-fold and 5-fold improvements over 4G, respectively.

The company explained that this solution goes beyond a simple communication component to serve as the core communication infrastructure supporting the era of “Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs) and Artificial Intelligence-Driven Vehicles (AIDVs).” The solution reliably supports △ Over-the-Air (OTA) software updates △ Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) real-time communication △ and high-capacity data transmission for autonomous driving. In particular, by significantly reducing communication latency, it delivers communication performance optimized for autonomous driving environments that require immediate responses and high safety standards.

This next-generation telematics system’s ultra-high-speed, ultra-low-latency communication serves as the foundation for maximizing the performance of “LG αWare,” LGELECTRONICS’ integrated automotive software platform. LG Corp. consists of entertainment solutions (PlayWare) for enjoying high-definition video and games, augmented reality (AR)-based navigation and user experience (MetaWare), and advanced driver-assistance systems (VisionWare) based on AI cameras; the advancement of the communication network has made it possible to significantly enhance the quality of these services.

Design and space utilization have also been improved. By integrating up to 12 antennas and communication modules into a single unit, signal loss is reduced, and the removal of protruding “shark fin antennas” enables automakers to achieve a sleek vehicle exterior.

LGELECTRONICS has also further strengthened the stability and reliability of its smart telematics. The system is designed to deliver excellent connection quality across a wide range of global communication environments, including maintaining stable performance even in high-temperature desert driving conditions.

As the world’s leading telematics provider by market share, LGELECTRONICS is strengthening its leadership in the automotive components business in the era of SDV and AIDV. In March, the company joined the Global 6G Coalition to drive standard development and system validation, laying the groundwork for building an open ecosystem.

Eun Seok-hyun, President and Head of LGELECTRONICS’ VS Business Division, stated, “We will continue to introduce innovative solutions in the field of automotive communications—which has established itself as a core competitive advantage in mobility—to further solidify our leadership in the telematics market, extending beyond the SDV era into the AIDV era.”
