[Edaily Reporter kyoungeun kim ] On the 24th, the KOSPI index closed around the 6,600 mark after falling more than 3% due to a sharp decline in Samsung Group stocks, including SamsungElectronics. The KOSDAQ market closed up more than 1% as news of SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD.’s sale of its stake in Samsung Display sparked a broad rally across the secondary battery sector.
On the afternoon of the 24th, the closing prices of the KOSPI and other indices are displayed on an electronic board in the trading room at Hana Bank’s headquarters in Jung-gu, Seoul.
On that day, the KOSPI closed at 6,696.96, down 3.12% from the previous trading day; the KOSDAQ closed at 813.33, up 1.42%; and on the Seoul foreign exchange market, the dollar-won exchange rate stood at 1,382.4 won, down 4.1 won from the previous day’s 3:30 p.m. weekly closing price. According to MP Doctor, the KOSPI closed at 6,696.96, down 215.99 points (3.12%) from the previous trading day. Although it rose to 6,884.57 at one point during the session, it fell as low as 6,656.07, widening its losses.
Trading volume for the day totaled 264.95 million shares, with a total trading value of 26.0998 trillion won. By stock, three stocks hit their upper price limit, 579 stocks rose, while 286 stocks closed lower.
By investor type, retail investors made net purchases of 3.3192 trillion won in an effort to prop up the index, but foreign and institutional investors led the decline with net sales of 3.6758 trillion won and 1.2917 trillion won, respectively. In program trading, there was a net purchase of 118.5 billion won in arbitrage trading, but a net sale of 3.0609 trillion won in non-arbitrage trading, resulting in an overall net sell of 2.9424 trillion won.
SamsungElectronics’ large-scale shareholder return plan, announced after the market closed last Friday, was perceived as a “news exhaustion” event today, exacerbating the decline. Amid assessments that the shareholder return plan—totaling 90 to 110 trillion won, including a special dividend of 30 trillion won—failed to meet market expectations, Samsung Life Insurance plummeted by over 13%, and SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION also fell by over 7%, with Samsung affiliates across the board unable to escape the downtrend.
Top-market-cap stocks, led by Samsung Group shares, closed sharply lower. SamsungElectronics(005930)closed at 257,000 won, down 24,500 won (8.70%), while Samsung Life Insurance(032830)closed at 285,500 won, plunging 43,000 won (13.09%). SamsungElectronics(1P)(005935)(-8.55%), SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION(028260)(-7.84%), and SKSQUARE(402340)(-4.19%) also fell in tandem.
Semiconductor stocks across the board came under pressure due to “sell-on” strategies following the announcement of large-scale shareholder returns and NVIDIA’s upcoming earnings release on the 27th. SK hynix(000660) also closed at 1,671,000 won, down 59,000 won (3.41%).
In contrast, LG Energy Solution(373220)rose 18,500 won (5.39%) to 362,000 won; HANWHA AEROSPACE(012450)rose 20,000 won (1.84%) to 1,105,000 won; and SAMSUNG BIOLOGICS(207940)rose 22,000 won (1.42%) to 1,573,000 won, showing strength. SamsungElectroMechanics(009150)(+0.15%) and HyundaiMotor(005380)(-0.24%) remained largely unchanged.

A total of 921 stocks closed higher, while 706 closed lower.
By investor type, foreign and institutional investors were net buyers of 241.7 billion won and 24.9 billion won, respectively, while retail investors were net sellers of 260.4 billion won. Funds that had exited semiconductor stocks flowed into the KOSDAQ market, driving gains in secondary battery and small- and medium-sized component stocks.
ECOPRO BM CO., LTD.(247540)closed at 117,000 won, up 11,400 won (10.80%), while ECOPRO CO., LTD(086520)closed at 87,900 won, up 6,200 won (7.59%). SIMMTECH Co., Ltd.(222800)(+5.52%) also closed sharply higher, buoyed by the strength in the semiconductor materials and components sector.
