RS Automation Co., Ltd. announced on the 25th that it had been finally selected for the “Development of Core Drive and Control Full-Stack Integrated Platform Technology for Next-Generation AI Robots Based on Physical AI” project, part of the Robot Industry Core Technology Development Program promoted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. Led by RS Automation Co., Ltd. with the participation of AI specialist Sage, this R&D project has a total budget of 5.373 billion won (including approximately 3.6 billion won in government funding) and will run for a total of 45 months from 2026 to 2029. The project is titled “Development of a Physical AI Integrated Drive Platform Applying AI-Based Multi-Axis Servo Optimization and High-Quality Control Data Management Technologies.” The core objective is to combine the motion control technology of existing industrial robots with AI to enable robots to independently assess and optimize their operating status, thereby establishing a virtuous cycle in which control data generated during actual operation is reused for AI training. The project is considered highly significant because it integrates controllers, servo drives, actuators—which convert AI decisions into precise physical movements—and control data into a single full-stack platform. As the lead organization, RS Automation Co., Ltd. is responsible for iMEC hardware and firmware, multi-axis synchronous control and generic APIs, drive and control modules for smart integrated actuators, and functional safety and security design. Sage is providing AI auto-tuning algorithms, fault diagnosis and predictive maintenance (PHM), data quality evaluation, and robot simulation technologies. Through this development, RS Automation Co., Ltd. plans to raise its Technology Readiness Level (TRL) from the current Level 5 to Level 8 and significantly increase the localization rate of core drive and control technologies to 90 percent. Based on this, the company envisions establishing a standard drive platform applicable to various next-generation AI robots, such as humanoids and collaborative robots. RS Automation Co., Ltd. stated, “Competitive advantage in physical AI lies in translating AI decisions into precise robotic movements and feeding physical data back into the AI system,” adding, “By combining motion control technology with AI, we will establish a standard physical AI drive platform that represents South Korea and expand into the global market.”
