“Scandal” is a Netflix series that tells the story of “Lady Jo,” a woman with exceptional talent who feels confined by her role as a woman in the Joseon Dynasty; “Jo Won,” the greatest womanizer in Joseon; their audacious and dangerous love wager; and “Hee-yeon,” a woman entangled in that wager. The series stars Son Ye-jin, Ji Chang-wook, and Nana. “Scandal” is a remake of the 2003 film “Scandal: A Story of Passion Between a Joseon Man and Woman,” directed by Lee Jae-yong. The original film garnered significant attention at the time for its star-studded cast, including Bae Yong-joon, Lee Mi-sook, and Jeon Do-yeon.
“Scandal” is an adaptation of French author Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’s 1782 novel “Dangerous Liaisons,” set in the Joseon Dynasty. The series is expected to offer a modern reinterpretation of the original’s classic story from a 2026 perspective, providing a multidimensional portrayal of the desires of various characters who defy the taboos of the Joseon era.
The unveiled teaser poster captivates viewers by capturing the three characters entangled in a secret game of seduction, framed like a painting. The Korean-style mise-en-scène used to portray these three characters in the poster heightens anticipation for how their narratives will unfold. The image of “Lady Jo” (Son Ye-jin) seated in the main quarters, surrounded by vibrant red flowers in full bloom, raises questions about why this demure noblewoman would propose such a wager and what desires she harbors. True to his title as a “Joseon Casanova,” “Jo Won” (Ji Chang-wook) stands confidently among women who seem to have stepped out of a portrait of beauties, sparking curiosity about whether he will win the wager and claim what he desires. The sight of “Hye-yeon” (Nana), wearing a sorrowful expression amidst the profusely blooming plum blossoms, deepens the curiosity about what fate awaits her as she unwittingly becomes the subject of the wager. Coupled with the tagline, “Covet what you cannot have,” the teaser heightens anticipation for how this wager—which defies the taboos of the era and forces each participant to reveal their desires—will ultimately unfold.
