[Edaily Reporter kyoungeun kim ] HyundaiMotor(005380)continues to trade lower on the 27th, following a sharp drop of over 3% the previous day. Analysts say the stock price reflects the market’s disappointment with the company’s dividend-focused strategy rather than a focus on share buybacks and cancellations.
As of 9:20 a.m. on the 27th, HyundaiMotor is trading at 406,000 won, down 2,000 won (-0.49%) from the previous trading day. The stock closed at 408,000 won the previous day, down 3.09%.

At the “2026 CEO Investor Day” (CID) held the previous day, HyundaiMotor announced that while it would cancel a total of 2,505,606 shares of treasury stock, it would maintain its existing policies, including a total shareholder return rate of at least 35% and a minimum dividend of at least 10,000 won.
Shin Yun-cheol, an analyst at KIWOOM Securities, noted, “There was no basis to expect that existing policies would be strengthened at this year’s CID,” adding that if any policy changes were to occur, they would likely take effect in 2028 and be announced at next year’s CID.
However, some observers have expressed disappointment with the structure, which caps the total amount for share buybacks and cancellations over three years at 4 trillion won, leaving room for additional shareholder returns primarily through dividends.
He explained, “The mix of dividends and share buybacks and cancellations needs to be reevaluated,” adding, “Dividend-focused shareholder return plans tend to fail to gain investor favor in terms of stock price, regardless of their scale.” Recently, SamsungElectronics and SK hynix also saw mixed market reactions depending on the composition of their shareholder return plans.
Lee Jae-il, an analyst at EUGENE INVESTMENT & SECURITIES, noted, “There was no mention of commercializing robotics, nor were there any surprise announcements,” but added, “Given that expectations for CID were not particularly high to begin with, yesterday’s decline was somewhat excessive.”
In contrast, Lee Byung-geun, an analyst at LS SECURITIES, offered a positive assessment, stating, “The fact that the company maintained its existing value-enhancement policy despite increased earnings volatility is a factor supporting the downside valuation.”
The lack of new announcements regarding new business ventures was also cited as a concern. Ha Neul, an analyst at NH INVESTMENT & SECURITIES, lowered the target price from 760,000 won to 620,000 won, stating, “Although the company is preparing new physical AI businesses such as humanoids and autonomous driving, the pace is slower than market expectations.” Kim Gwang-sik, an analyst at KYOBOSECURITIESCO.,LTD., also mentioned the potential for short-term pressure on the stock price, stating, “Given the high expectations for new businesses, the lack of new information is disappointing.”
