Director Lee Chang-dong’s new Netflix film “Possible Love” tells the story of two couples—a laid-off worker and his wife, and a documentary director and her husband—who come together to produce a documentary and are confronted with each other’s different lives and hidden desires.
The first trailer, released on the 27th, opens with “Mi-ok” (Jeon Do-yeon) walking alone along a forest path in the bluish dawn. Her complex expression, accompanied by the line, “It was a strange feeling. It was as if I had become someone else,” immediately catches the viewer’s attention.
This leads into a scene where “Mi-ok” finally bursts into tears in a car—with no clear destination in sight—after “Ho-seok” (Seol Kyung-gu) tells her, “If you want to cry, just cry,” piquing the audience’s curiosity about their story.
The scene where “Mi-ok” sits before the camera of “Ye-ji’s” (Jo Yeo-jeong) documentary crew, recalling the general labor strike by saying, “When we started the strike, I didn’t know it would turn out like this,” while “Ho-seok” listens silently, hints at the time the two have endured together and the scars that have yet to heal.
The scene where “Ye-ji” cautiously suggests an interview with “Ho-seok,” and “Mi-ok” responds that he won’t agree to it, highlights the subtle distance between the two—who seem close yet struggle to draw near—and heightens curiosity about what story lies ahead for them.

Later, when “Ye-ji” tells her husband “Sang-woo” (Jo In-sung), “I’m trying to love those people. I’m a documentary filmmaker, after all,” her words spark curiosity about how she will integrate herself into the lives of “Mi-ok” and “Ho-seok.” The four of them gather for a warm, friendly meal—but only briefly. “You’re different from those people,” says “Sang-woo,” revealing the gap that exists between the two couples.
Ultimately, the four set off on a summer vacation together at “Ye-ji’s” suggestion—a development that hints at the different lives and desires they will encounter there. This heightens anticipation not only for director Lee Chang-dong’s new story, which has captured the world’s attention, but also for the ensemble performances of Jeon Do-yeon, Seol Kyung-gu, Jo In-sung, and Jo Yeo-jeong.
“Possible Love” has been officially invited to the “Zabaltegi-Tabakalera” section of the 74th San Sebastián International Film Festival, following its selection for the competition sections of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, the 51st Toronto International Film Festival, and the Main Slate section of the 64th New York Film Festival, the “Gala Premiere” section at the 22nd Zurich Film Festival, and the Special Presentation section at the 45th Vancouver International Film Festival.
The “Zabaltegui-Tabakalera” section of the San Sebastián International Film Festival—the oldest and most prestigious in the Spanish-speaking world—is an official competition section that showcases films with the most open and daring visions. Director Lee Chang-dong was first invited to the San Sebastián International Film Festival in 2010 with *Poetry* and was later featured in the same section in 2022 with his short film *Heartbeat*.
The “Gala Premiere” section at the Zurich Film Festival and the “Special Presentations” section at the Vancouver International Film Festival showcase this year’s most anticipated and talked-about films.
*Possible Love* was also selected as South Korea’s entry in the International Feature Film category for the 99th Academy Awards. It will be released in theaters on the 23rd of next month and on Netflix on November 6.
