Korean-Japanese Lineup… Strategy to Capture the Global Fanbase
Kicking Off Pre-Debut with Guerrilla Events and Cover Videos
[Edaily Starin YUN GI BACK Reporter] WE Entertainment is set to debut a new boy group for the first time in about six years since the group WEi. The agency appears to be accelerating its market entry through a “pre-debut” strategy, which involves simultaneously holding offline events and releasing cover content even before the official debut to build a fan base in advance. OUIBOYS (Photo: W Entertainment) On the 9th, WE Entertainment announced that the 8-member multinational boy group OUIBOYS (tentative name) is currently preparing for a debut scheduled for the end of this year. The group consists of Seungjun, Anji, Aito, Si-hwan, Jung-jae, Min-seo, Seung-woo, and Masayoshi, and includes members of various nationalities, including South Korea and Japan. OUIBOYS is putting significant effort into expanding its fan base even before their debut. They have held guerrilla events at locations such as Songdo Art Hall, Lotte World, Hongdae and Sinchon, Jayang Station, and Busan Station, and have been consistently releasing cover videos and challenge content through their official social media channels. This is interpreted as a strategy to build a fanbase before their official activities begin—thereby increasing their potential for early success—rather than simply boosting recognition around the time of their debut. They are also prominently showcasing their performance capabilities. In their recently released cover video of BTS’s “Boy in Luv,” they emphasized the eight-member synchronized choreography and dynamic pacing to establish the group’s distinct identity. Through practice room videos and short-form content, they highlight each member’s personality and teamwork, building not only their stage skills but also the narrative essential for fostering a fanbase. In particular, the multinational lineup and digital-focused pre-debut promotion can be seen as a strategic choice to accelerate the influx of global fans, rather than following the conventional approach of expanding overseas after a domestic debut. With competition among K-pop rookies intensifying, the size of the fanbase and the buzz surrounding content prior to debut determine early success; accordingly, WEBOYS appears to be focusing on attracting fans by positioning themselves as a “group whose growth journey fans can follow” rather than a “fully formed group.” We Entertainment CEO We Myung-hee stated, “WeBoyz plans to connect with global fans through music, transcending the boundaries of nationality and language,” adding, “We will present highly polished music and performances.” WeBoyz are in the final stages of preparation with the goal of debuting within the year, and their official group name will be revealed at the time of their debut.
