[Edaily Reporter LEE DAWON ] SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION(028260)is partnering with global nuclear power companies to target the European small modular reactor (SMR) market. The company plans to expand cooperation centered on SMR projects currently underway in Poland and the United Kingdom, while also identifying additional business opportunities in Central and Eastern Europe.

SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION’s Construction Division announced on the 23rd that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with GE Vernova, Hitachi, and Shintos Green Energy (SGE) at the Atlantic Council Nuclear Energy Policy Summit held in New York, U.S., the previous day (local time) to develop the SMR market and identify business opportunities. The event was held as a side event to the United Nations General Assembly.

The four companies agreed to jointly develop a business model for supplying the “BWRX-300,” a 300 MW-class SMR, to various European countries. The core strategy is to scale up the business by repeatedly developing the same nuclear power plant model across multiple regions.

The companies also divided their respective roles. GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy, a joint venture between GE Vernova and Hitachi, will supply the design and technology for the BWRX-300. Hitachi will provide nuclear technology and industrial capabilities, while SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION will handle engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) based on its experience in nuclear power and energy infrastructure projects. SG CO., LTD. will be responsible for local business development in Europe.

Related projects are already underway in Poland and the United Kingdom. SGE has secured a decision-in-principle for 26 BWRX-300 reactors in Poland and is prioritizing the development of three sites capable of accommodating the first 14 of these reactors.

In the UK, the companies are pursuing a project comprising a total of 14 units across three sites, with a capacity of 4.2 GW. The project has now entered the in-depth review phase of the preliminary regulatory assessment, led by GBE-N, the UK’s national nuclear agency. Based on this agreement, the four companies plan to seek additional business opportunities in Central and Eastern Europe and the UK.

The BWRX-300 is a 300-MW-class SMR that simplifies and standardizes the design based on existing boiling water reactor technology. The first unit is currently under construction in Canada.
