[Edaily Reporter JAEMIN SONG ] Six Samsung affiliates, including SamsungElectronics, SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION, and Samsung SDS, are investing $1 billion (approximately 1.4 trillion won) in the artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure market. The plan is to expand business opportunities in the global AI infrastructure market by jointly investing in a U.S. company that provides integrated AI infrastructure solutions, ranging from data centers to power and cooling systems. This investment is also expected to broaden the areas of collaboration between the affiliates, leveraging their respective business capabilities in semiconductors, data center construction and operation, cooling, and batteries.

According to Samsung on the 29th, six companies—including SamsungElectronics, SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION, Samsung SDS, SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD., Samsung Life Insurance, and SamsungFire&MarineInsurance—have decided to invest a total of $1 billion in “Helix Digital Infrastructure (Helix),” a company established by the U.S. global investment firm KKR.

Helix, which announced its launch last June, is a company that bundles and provides the infrastructure necessary for AI data centers. Its business scope extends beyond the development and operation of hyperscale data centers to include power generation, transmission and distribution, optical communication networks, and network infrastructure. Its core mission is to enable hyperscalers—who must respond to surging AI demand—to secure the necessary infrastructure on a large scale.

Helix is led by Adam Selipsky, the former CEO of Amazon Web Services (AWS). Samsung affiliates are participating as founding investors in Helix alongside KKR, NVIDIA, the U.S. power company Veestra, and the Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA). The plan is to secure power—a core component of AI data center infrastructure—through in-house investment and a partnership with Veestra.

Samsung’s decision to participate in the joint investment through six affiliates stems from the fact that the group possesses businesses across its various divisions that are closely tied to AI data centers. These range from semiconductors produced by SamsungElectronics’ Device Solutions (DS) division to cooling solutions from Flact Group—a subsidiary specializing in data center HVAC—as well as SAMSUNG C&T CORPORATION’s data center and power plant engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services; Samsung SDS’s data center construction, operation, and GPU cloud services (GPUaaS); and SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD.’s uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and battery backup units (BBU) are prime examples.

In particular, in the data center cooling sector, the company supplies a range of products through Flact Group, from air-cooling solutions to cooling distribution units (CDUs) for liquid cooling. Flact Group operates 14 production bases worldwide and maintains a supply and service network spanning 65 countries.

Samsung SDS is also expanding its business scope from data center design, construction, and operation to GPUaaS. It is applying Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) technologies not only to its own data centers but also to the construction of the National AI Computing Center. SAMSUNG SDI CO.,LTD. is seeking additional business opportunities centered on UPS and BBU systems, which are essential for the stable operation of high-performance servers.

Samsung affiliates plan to use this investment as an opportunity to expand their collaboration with Helix and investment partners in the AI infrastructure sector. They intend to pursue new business opportunities in the global AI infrastructure market by leveraging the core business capabilities of each affiliate—including semiconductors, cooling systems, construction and operations, and batteries—necessary for data center construction.
