[Edaily Reporter Kwon Oh Seok ] The KOSPI, which opened slightly flat on the 29th, gradually narrowed its losses during the session and managed to hold above the 6,800 level.

According to MP Doctor on the 29th, the KOSPI opened at 6,844.41, down 45.33 points (0.66%) from the previous trading day, and closed at 6,870.81, down 18.93 points (0.27%).
During the KOSPI’s regular trading session that day, retail and institutional investors made net purchases of 1.1449 trillion won and 120.7 billion won, respectively, while foreign investors alone made net sales of 2.9043 trillion won. By trading type, combined arbitrage and non-arbitrage trades showed a net selling position of 2.1093 trillion won.
Initially, the securities industry had predicted that the KOSPI would open lower due to factors such as the sharp rise in U.S. Treasury yields and the ex-dividend date for SamsungElectronics, but expected it to recover its losses during the session thanks to bargain-hunting.
Lee Kyung-min, an analyst at DaishinSecurities, commented, “The domestic stock market trended lower as the burden of rising U.S. Treasury yields intensified. The renewed upward trend in international oil prices also limited risk appetite and acted as downward pressure on the market.” Earlier, yields on 10-year and 30-year U.S. Treasury bonds rose to 5.26% and 5.57%, respectively, while international oil prices also climbed again, with WTI (West Texas Intermediate) and Brent crude futures reaching $94.1 and $99.8, respectively.
For SamsungElectronics(005930), which marked its ex-dividend date that day, common and preferred shares saw mixed results. On an ex-dividend date, investors are not eligible to receive dividends, so theoretically, the stock price may fall by the amount of the dividend. Based on the Korea Exchange’s regular trading session, common stock closed at 272,500 won, up 2,500 won (0.93%), while preferred stock closed at 204,000 won, down 3,000 won (1.45%). Since preferred shares typically have lower share prices than common shares—resulting in relatively higher dividend yields—and lower liquidity, they are generally much more susceptible to the supply-and-demand shock caused by the loss of dividend rights on the ex-dividend date.
Among other top-market-cap stocks that day, SK hynix(000660)closed at 1,765,000 won, down 3,000 won (0.17%) from the previous trading day, while SamsungElectroMechanics(009150)closed at 1,528,000 won, up 29,000 won (1.93%), buoyed by news of a massive investment exceeding 4 trillion won the previous day.
Meanwhile, the KOSDAQ index opened at 843.87, down 2.71 points (0.32%) from the previous trading day, and closed at 849.80, up 3.22 points (0.38%). In the KOSDAQ regular session that day, retail investors and institutional investors were net buyers of 148.3 billion won and 5.4 billion won, respectively, while foreign investors were the sole net sellers, offloading 129.1 billion won. By trading program, there was a net selling volume of 109.9 billion won when combining arbitrage and non-arbitrage trades.
