Relief as Interest Rates Begin to Fall and AI Stocks Rebound
SK hynix Up 1.70%, SamsungElectroMechanics Up 1.64%
[Edaily Reporter kyoungeun kim ] On the 30th, the KOSPI opened higher, buoyed by strong performance from major semiconductor stocks such as SamsungElectronics and SK hynix. The KOSDAQ is also showing gains and moving in the same direction as the KOSPI. According to MP Doctor, as of 9:05 a.m. today, the KOSPI is trading at 6,925.41, up 54.60 points (0.79%) from the previous day. Foreign investors are driving the index higher with net purchases of 62.6 billion won, while institutions are net buyers of 23.6 billion won; in contrast, retail investors are net sellers of 95.5 billion won. By stock, 535 are up, 97 are unchanged, and 229 are down, with gainers outnumbering losers. The KOSDAQ is also on the rise. The KOSDAQ is currently at 856.93, up 7.13 points (0.84%) from the previous day. While retail investors made net purchases of 29.3 billion won, foreign and institutional investors made net sales of 1.7 billion won and 16.5 billion won, respectively. With 951 stocks rising—significantly outnumbering the 537 that fell—the KOSDAQ is showing a more robust trend than the KOSPI. Overnight, the New York stock market fell for the second consecutive day as long-term Treasury yields surged despite a decline in international oil prices. The yield on the 30-year Treasury note soared to 5.62%, its highest level since June 2002, while the 10-year yield rose to 5.293%, its highest level since June 2007, putting pressure on the stock market. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 51,349.92, down 0.26% from the previous trading day; the S&P 500 closed at 7,670.84, down 0.17%; and the Nasdaq closed at 26,797.54, down 0.09%. However, as the rise in interest rates subsided toward the end of the session and AI and semiconductor stocks—such as Micron (+1.1%) and Meta (+3.2%)—managed to rebound, a sense of relief has set in on the domestic stock market. Han Ji-young, an analyst at KIWOOM Securities, noted, “Although the prevailing market view is to prepare for the 10-year yield reaching 5.5%, the fact that interest rates are rising faster than expected is putting downward pressure on stock prices,” but added, “It is important to note that there are signs of easing uncertainty in the Middle East, such as September crude oil exports from the region hitting their highest level since February.” She continued, “Events that could curb the pace of interest rate hikes—such as tonight’s August PCE data and Friday’s nonfarm payrolls report—are on the horizon, and Micron’s earnings, set to be released early tomorrow morning, will serve as the first turning point to gauge not only the semiconductor sector but also the broader stock market’s ability to overcome macroeconomic uncertainty through earnings.” She advised, “While volatility may increase this week, maintaining current positions is at least a viable option.” Looking at individual stocks, SamsungElectronics(005930), currently the top company by market capitalization, is trading at 274,000 won, up 1,500 won (0.55%), while SK hynix(000660), ranked second, is trading at 1,795,000 won, up 30,000 won (1.70%). Among the gainers were SamsungElectroMechanics(009150)(up 1.64%), SKSQUARE(402340)(up 1.07%), and LG Energy Solution(373220)(up 0.99%). On the other hand, SamsungElectronics(1P)(005935)(0.98%), KB Financial Group(105560)(0.75%), Samsung Life Insurance(032830)(0.52%), and HyundaiMotor(005380)(0.43%) fell, while SAMSUNG BIOLOGICS(207940)(0.07%) remained flat or slightly down. On the KOSDAQ market, EO Technics Co., Ltd.(039030)(4.54%), HPSP Co., Ltd.(403870)(4.75%), WONIK IPS Co.,Ltd.(240810)(2.23%), ECOPRO BM CO., LTD.(247540)(2.83%), ECOPRO CO., LTD(086520)(2.28%), LEENO Industrial Inc(058470)(1.77%), JUSUNG ENGINEERING Co.,Ltd.(036930)(1.35%), and Rainbow Robotics(277810)(1.32%) all rose across the board. On the other hand, SIMMTECH Co., Ltd.(222800)(1.97%) fell, while Alteogen Inc.(196170)remained unchanged. By sector, trading companies, shipbuilding, semiconductors, and electronics are showing strength. Conversely, essential household goods, banking, and healthcare equipment and services are on a downward trend.
