[Edaily Reporter Shin Yeong-bin ] SamsungElectronics(005930)is accelerating the process of migrating the photo and video backup service for its Galaxy “Gallery” app from Microsoft OneDrive to Google Photos.
According to the information technology (IT) industry on the 1st, SamsungElectronics has recently been rolling out Google Photos integration features in phases through updates to its Gallery cloud synchronization service. By linking a Google account in the Gallery app, users can back up their photos and videos to Google’s storage and access the same content across multiple Samsung devices. The direct Gallery-OneDrive synchronization service, operated by SamsungElectronics and Microsoft, ended on the 30th of last month. While photos and videos previously stored on OneDrive will remain, users will no longer be able to view OneDrive content directly in the Gallery app or automatically sync new photos. OneDrive users will need to use the camera backup feature in a separate app.
The Gallery-OneDrive integration was first introduced in 2019 as part of an expansion of cooperation between the two companies. Since then, it has served as a means for Galaxy users to back up their photos and videos for approximately seven years.
Samsung has announced that it will offer a new Gallery service utilizing Google storage in certain regions overseas following the discontinuation of OneDrive. The Japanese website also announced that users can manage their photos and videos by linking the Gallery app to a Google account.
The scope of implementation in South Korea and the official launch date have not yet been clearly disclosed. SamsungElectronics’ official announcement in South Korea has only stated that the company has been reviewing a new synchronization service following the discontinuation of OneDrive.
If Samsung Gallery’s integration with Google Photos expands, the Galaxy’s photo backup ecosystem could shift from being Microsoft-centric to Google-centric. Service integration with Google—which provides both the Android operating system and Google Photos—is also expected to be further strengthened.
Regarding the discontinuation of OneDrive integration, a Samsung Cloud representative stated, “We are currently exploring various options for a new synchronization service,” adding, “We will strive to minimize any inconvenience to our customers.”
