[Edaily Reporter Ahn Hye-shin ] Ford Motor (F) has barely managed to hold onto its third-place position in U.S. auto sales.
As of 11:41 a.m. on the 2nd (local time), Ford shares were trading at $12.05, down 1.83% ($0.22) from the previous trading day.
Ford announced that its third-quarter vehicle sales totaled 507,395 units, a 6.6% decrease from the previous year. This figure excludes sales of large trucks. This result narrowly surpasses HyundaiMotor’s third-quarter sales of 506,200 units. HyundaiMotor(005380) ’s sales increased by 5.4% year-over-year. HyundaiMotor’s sales figure combines sales from the Hyundai, KIA CORPORATION, and Genesis brands.
On a cumulative basis through the third quarter, Ford’s sales were approximately 89,700 units ahead of HyundaiMotor’s.
Ford has been struggling to produce its flagship F-Series pickup trucks following two fires at parts suppliers last year that disrupted production and sales.
However, Ford downplayed HyundaiMotor’s sales figures, stating, “Although they share the same parent company under corporate governance, the Kia and Hyundai brands are operated separately in the U.S.” In other words, Ford expressed dissatisfaction with the practice of grouping HyundaiMotor and KIA CORPORATION—which compete as separate, independent legal entities and brands in the U.S.—under a single “HyundaiMotor” umbrella for direct comparison with Ford.
